Tell the time and tie their shoelaces?

Just wondered if it was reasonable to expect them to be able to do these things by that age?

My DS is just 8, and has got the hang of shoe laces in the last month. A year ago only a handful in his class could do it. (They all used to queue up for their football boots to be done). Telling the time, I think it varies from as young as 3 to as old as 11.

bellavita · 11/02/2009 12:30

Yes

AccidentalMum · 11/02/2009 12:30

I could but equally didn't know the alphabet, the way to the spar (or anywhere FTM) and couldn't spread butter on toast very well.

Don't think DSD could do laces at 9.

idobelieveinfairies · 11/02/2009 12:31

Yes to both..but my 9 year old can't ride a bike yet!

They are all different.

frogs · 11/02/2009 12:31

Yes to both.

WilfSell · 11/02/2009 12:32

Yes
Yes

blametheparents · 11/02/2009 12:37

Time - yes

Shoelaces - no

To be fair he is only 7, and I have only ever bought him velcro strap shoes and trainers

hippipotamiHasLostThreePounds · 11/02/2009 12:38

Yes to both. He has also just mastered tying his own school tie, but it took a while..

helsbels4 · 11/02/2009 12:38

Time - yes

Shoelaces - he can but not very well

They are all different and all get there eventually

BonsoirAnna · 11/02/2009 12:39

Yes, by age 9 all children unless they have SN should be able to tell the time and tie their shoelaces.

wheesht · 11/02/2009 12:40

Yes to both, but she does have a very odd way of tying her laces. Works though!

Bink · 11/02/2009 12:43

As rule of thumb, I do think 9 is reasonable for that. (And yes my 9yo can do those, though he's another that can't ride a bike and haphazard as to directions - left him to walk himself four blocks (of a routine daily walk) to school this morning & was thoroughly nervous about it)

AccidentalMum · 11/02/2009 12:45

Oh I definitely couldn't ride a bike, and not for want of trying.

devientenigma · 11/02/2009 12:50

ny daughter is nearly 12, not special needs and is just starting to get the hang of telling the time.

idobelieveinfairies · 11/02/2009 12:53

my dd (16) is very intelligent and has a bit of trouble telling the time..it takes her a while IYKWIM..she can't tell the time from a 24 hour clock.....and nor can DP who is 34...i do get cross with them sometimes...i know i shouldn't

SoMuchToBits · 11/02/2009 12:54

My 8 year old can tell the time
I don't think he can tie shoelaces, but then he has never had shoes with laces...
I know he can tie a simple knot, but not sure about the bow bit.

ilove · 11/02/2009 12:55

My 6 year olds, one can tell the time the other can tie shoelaces

My 9 year old has done both since 7 at least

FAQinglovely · 11/02/2009 12:55

DS1 (8 1/2yrs)

can tie his shoes laces - but only learnt a few weeks ago when DH bought him some new trainers with laces - and I turned round and told him "well you'll have to teach him then".

Time - sort of.........well actually I think he can tell it better than he lets on - but I'm not 100% certain.

DS2 on the other hand is already confident with his "o'clocks" and "half pasts" - even on a clock that has no numbers on it (he's just turned 5!)

PandaG · 11/02/2009 12:56

DS - 9 Time yes, and has done since he started school. Teacher did not believe it but he could.

Shoelaces, not very well, but his boots are velcro so he hasn't had a lot of practice.

DD is 7 and can pretty much tell the time, and can tie a bow in her dressing gown belt, but not in a shoelace - again she has velcro for school

ByTheSea · 11/02/2009 12:56

Time - yes, shoelaces - barely

singersgirl · 11/02/2009 12:56

DS1 at 9 couldn't tie shoelaces, but that was because we'd never taught him. I'm not sure he can now (10.5) but he has just got a pair of lace up football boots so he'll be learning.

Tell the time - yes.

(And ride a bike, though was one of 3 children in his class who didn't pass the preliminary 'safety' screen for the cycling proficiency this week, so has to practise in the playground rather than go out on the roads).

FAQinglovely · 11/02/2009 12:57

oh riding a bike - that someone mentioned - no none of my DS's can

Although I'm hoping to get them new bikes for the summer and get DH on the case
