What age is normal for counting and letters?

My ds has started to count, and so far has mastered up to 6 on his own plus adding in numbers up to 13 (number of stairs in house) if I stop randomly.
He knows 3/4 of the letters in the alphabet as he has some foam ones in the bath. For example, c is for cuddle, so I can ask him to find the letter in the water or point to the letter and ask him what it stands for.

Is this normal at his age - he is 2.1?

bloody hell!

child prodigy!

nellyfin · 10/02/2009 21:37

sorry Jim, totally normal

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 10/02/2009 21:42

Totally normal, it's just learning through repetition.

Watch this, the poor girl probably has no concept of what a country is. It's all just training, means nothing for intelligence.

andyrobo237 · 10/02/2009 21:44

My DS does that and he is not yet 2.

He is not a child genius, but has an older sister who can count and socialises with several 3 and 4 year olds, so has learnt it by repetition.

It is all quite normal and does not mean anything.

Hulababy · 10/02/2009 21:46

It is within the normal parameters.

But well done to him regardless

ShowOfHands · 10/02/2009 21:46

Yup, 21 month old dd can do this. It's just repetition, means very little at this stage. It's lovely though isn't it?

BananaFruitBat · 10/02/2009 21:47

DS and his best friend could both recite the most of the alphabet by the time they were 2. Although I've never heard of the letter 'mellamellabee'.

Bless them.

ohdearwhatamess · 10/02/2009 21:53

Normal, I think, but still very cute when it is your own.

JimJammum · 10/02/2009 21:55

Wasn't too worried about the child prodigy thing (don't need a genius on my hands thanks), but was a little baffled as his mates don't seem to be doing it and I didn't think letters and numbers came until 3ish.

Was very proud of him !! and shall continue to be even if he's just being a clever little parrot!

My 2 year old can do this too - counting, and knows all the letters of the alphabet.
I think it is cute, but probably a bit of a "party trick" rather than any great genius.

TheCrackFox · 10/02/2009 22:00

pretty normal but very cute.

keevamum · 10/02/2009 22:04

No it is definitely normal. However, although everyone here thinks it isn't related to intelligence I disagree.

I have 2 DD's both intelligent in their own ways but the DD who could recite like a parrot does do better at school because she has that great memory capacity. It doesn't in my mind equate to her being more intelligent than the other but I think they will probably do better at school while schools still assess using traditional methods.

Just re-read that does it make any sense?
