10 month old DT'S not crawling or sitting unaided.

DD is starting to pull her legs up under her bum, and stretch her arms. Is this is a good sign? DS just discovered he can tummy shuffle but is showing no interest in crawling. They can both sit between my legs on the floor slightly supported, but not yet by themselves. MIL told DP she is concerned. Should I be?

My DTs sat at about 8.5 months but didn't crawl (or show any interest!) until they were a year. Now at 18mo I can't keep up with them as they run around the house!! It's hard not to worry but I really wouldn't, they'll get there soon. Were they prem at all? Mine were 5 weeks prem and I did find that they were slightly 'behind' until about a year. Now they seem completely caught up with all their peers.

My friend's ds only started to sit and crawl at 11 months, he has caught up now. At ds' 12 month review they asked me if he was sitting unaided and crawling so I probably wouldn't worry until then

They were born at 32 weeks. Should I still be taking this into account with regards to their development? TBH I only really started to worry after MIL's comments. I have had a struggle with weaning, so have been really concentrating on that and am now worried that I haven't been concentrating on their physical development enough.

the fact they were born 8weeks prem makes a big difference

doctors say for until prems are a year or so, that some skills they may be slower, but by a year most have caught up

really your babies are only 8mth olds - and i know many 8mths who dont sit up - yours are almost there, give them another week or two and they will be sitting up unaided!!

all children vary - again some tummy shuffle and dont crawl as they work out they can move

i wouldnt worry personally

littlefrog · 09/02/2009 15:27

all so variable, if none of the health folk are worried I'd relax.
DS sat early (5 months-ish). Then just sat until about 11 months - no crawling, shuffling; even stopped rolling over. Totally refused to take ANY weight on his feet (referred to paeds who said don't fret). Started a bit of weight bearing at about 15 months. Walked at nearly 19 - which was nearly a year after some of his cohort...
You might want to ask your mother what you and your brothers/sisters did - I found it reassuring to hear that DH and BIL were extremely late walkers (my family weren't, so it was a surprise).

my DD was only 4 weeks early and couldnt sit up until about 10 months, and commando crawled at 13 months, she didn't walk until 2 but is now doing really well, I'd give them time!!

plj · 09/02/2009 15:52

Thanks all. It is too easy to focus on what you think they should be doing rather that appreciating what they can do now. HV and Paediatrician all happy, so I will try to relax a bit more myself.

According to MIL, DP and SIL were very early walkers, so maybe that's why she is worried about my DT's.

DS didn't sit up until 9 months but was walking at 10 months! At 19 he is now a long tall skinny bricklayer
DD didn't walk until 13 months but had hundreds of words at 18 months
what I'm trying to say is they are all different and all develop differently

bellabelly · 09/02/2009 16:35

Can't remember about sitting up but with my DTs, one started crawling at about 10 and a half months, the other not until a few days after his 1st birthday. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it's quite common with twins for all their "milestones" to happen a little later than for the average singleton baby and not a cause for worry at all. Mine have only just started walking (they are 18 months, just) and i know all my nct group's babies were way ahead of this.

chipmonkey · 09/02/2009 17:19

plj, ds3 was born at 32 weeks and I was told that you should use the "corrected" age up until they are 4 years old, which I found very helpful! I can't remember what age he crawled at but I know he didn't walk till 16 months.

dairymoo · 09/02/2009 17:33

Also, just to add, I don't really think there's anything you can do to aid their physical development, so please don't feel like you should be doing all sorts of things to get them to sit up/crawl, etc. They'll do it in their own time - bet they'll be sitting by this time next week, now that you've posted!

plj · 09/02/2009 17:39

Thanks everyone. dairymoo-that would be typical! but nice!

plj, I think you should tell your dh to tell your MIL that this is normal for prem babies as otherwise she will get on his case about every other "late" milestone and I'm sure neither of you needs the hassle!

plj · 09/02/2009 17:56

Thanks chipmonkey-she does comment often with regards to their development unfortunately. I don't think she really appreciates what it's like to have a prem baby, let alone 2.
