Need ideas on finger foods to give 10 month old?

My DD is going through her independent phase and refusing to be fed. I need some ideas about new finger foods to ensure that I actually get some food inside her. Had a nice routine of purees going and now I'm a bit flummoxed!

oven cooked chips/wedges, toast soldiers, banana slices, slices of omlette, cheese straws, grated cheese, carrot sticks (cooked so they are soft), cooked brocolli, apple wedges, fish fingers, bread and cheese spread or bread and butter,

Bleuravin · 05/02/2009 18:12

Have you seen these ? They are great for the child that wants to be independent and feed themselves but when you want them to eat 'real' food. You can put most types of food into them and the mesh bag stops them from getting big chunks of food which would choke them. They're a bit messy..but feeding in general is messy aye?

UniS · 05/02/2009 22:15

At 10 months a mesh bag would seem over kill. IMHO.
Just about anything you are eating is worth a try. IIRC at 10 months boy had christmas dinner, he adored roast potatoes, brocli, bits of chicken or ham or hard boiled egg. Also self fed Pasta shapes with sauce on. cucumber rings, dried apple crisps. Toast. sandwiches. breakfast cereals ( dry).

Boy did have lots of teeth by then so YMMV.

thequietone · 05/02/2009 22:22

"just about anything you are eating is ok". Wrong. I eat food with copious amounts of chilli and garlic. I don't eat bland meat and two veg every day. I did purée the first time and am doing it again this time. Give snacks to hold to learn hand to mouth and that's fine. BLW...my arse.

starkadder · 06/02/2009 14:46

Our baby is exactly the same - has always been a great eater but now thinks purees are passé.
(It isn't really a question of my opinions on purees v. BLW - he wants finger foods because he wants to be independent)
He LOVES rice cakes so you could try them, but they aren't very nutritious. We are thinking of bits of grilled chicken, veg.

nannynz · 06/02/2009 16:04

A baby can(and may enjoy) foods with chilli and garlic in, garlic probably more so. My past charges have eaten (or at least tried) my hot spicy foods either dipped in pitta bread or vege or feeding themselves, from an early age perhaps 7/8 months. They do not need plain food just what the family eats. If a food is too hot a dollop of yougurt can cool it down no worries.

I did a mix of BLW and purees and from about 10 months DD would not eat purees only normal food!

In addition to the list DLI had, i also usually give her:

pitta bread dipped in hoummus, avocado and tuna, all different types of beans (not baked), strips of chicken, fish fingers cut up smaller, small veggies and dips (baby suitable ones), large pasta that she can play with and lots more obviously but brain having a dull moment now!

thequietone My DD loves chilli and garlic and i just introduced the amounts slowly. Don't be so quick to dismiss - what doesn't work for you can be great for others

Clure · 06/02/2009 17:46

houmous is fantastic - a bowl of this with all sorts of veggies, breadsticks, oatcakes, mini rice cakes, toasted soldiers to dip into it.

Have you seen this book (my DD went through this finger food only phase) "Finger Food For Babies and Toddlers" Jennie Maizels

Mimia · 06/02/2009 18:51

I would like to second the Jennie Maizels book, I found it really good for inspiration. I agree that at 10 months DD was trying abit of whatever we had, chilli and garlic included.

UniS · 06/02/2009 19:40

TQO - Garlic has always been one of boys fav ingredients. hes got less keen on hot spicey stuff as hes got older (typical toddler food fads) but at 10 months, yes he was chomping away on chilli and curry when we had them and spicy pasta sauces or stir frys as well enjoying roast dinners ( which often have quite bit of garlic tucked away in the chicken).
Most 10 month olds really can eat what their parents eat so long as their parents diet is moderately healthy. Kids have been eating chilli and other strong flavors for a long time all over the world.

Ebb · 06/02/2009 22:00

Ds is 8 mths and finger foods he likes include pasta (fusilli) with either pesto or a tomato based sauce, cheese on toast, eggy bread, babybel, mini sandwiches, fish fingers, cucumber, rice cakes, bread sticks, clementines, grapes, hummous on toast, carrot sticks ( cooked ) and broccoli florets to name but a few. He will still let me feed him at the moment (!) and loves fish pie which I don't mush as it's perfectly soft already. He doesn't have any teeth yet but doesn't seem to affect his ability to eat 'normal' food.

thequietone · 06/02/2009 22:41

I am going to walk away from this one. BLW is too new and unresearched for me to try on my DS2. Gosh I am jolly impressed at your endless lists of chokeable foods you give your children. For the record my DS2 has a mix of chewable purees along with something to hold and learn hand-mouth coordination with. Same as DS1 who happily munches on anything because he likes to try. See...there was a successful weaning world before some bored mums came up with BLW so they could brag...

UniS · 06/02/2009 22:52

No worries- each to their own. I'd not heard of BLW either- boy just refused to be spoon fed and started helping himself to things on my plate.

thequietone · 06/02/2009 22:55

sorry...just rereading and I was vile just then. i did mean what i said but not in such a bitchy way. Apologies. I'm really not feeling myself right now (ahem)

Ebb · 06/02/2009 23:46

When I first started nannying it was common place to wean at 4 months so by 9/10mths most would have naturally progressed to lumpy food and finger foods. It's just now we wean at 6mths so it does seem that babies are given 'normal' food earlier. Ds gags occassionally but there is a huge difference between gagging and proper choking. Understandably alot of parents find it more stressful than the babes. At the end of the day you must do what feels right for you and your child. I wouldn't judge anyone for doing purée or blw. I think people talk about blw alot because it's still relatively new and people are excited to realize you don't have to purée everything and babies can eat a wide variety of tastes and textures.
