Hi, My ds2 is 1 in afew weeks. He is a very happy contented little boy who is extremely laid back and a joy to be around. He isn't crawling yet, although he gets everywhere by pulling himself along the oor with his arms and pushing with his feet. he may just continue to do this instead of the usual way of crawling. He cant sit up unaided, well he can for a ceratin amount of time, upto maybe a minute or so. i definetely wouldnt be able to sit him down and walk away from him. He has started ping himself up on things that are low to the ground. he does have quite lot of strength in his legs and will stand just holding my hands. He sits upright in highchair and push chair but obviously he is supported. i am really starting to worry now as i thought he'd be able to sit better by now. its almost ke he has no interest in sitting cause he wants to be off doing something else so its like he hasnt learnt to do it, does that make sense. any advice please xxx

so he's kind of bottom-shuffling instead of crawling? I think that's very common.

with the sitting, I guess I would have expected my 11 month old to be more secure than that...It sounds as if he's developing just fine but why not ask the GP or HV about it?

mummy2t · 03/02/2009 11:59

yeah i have his 1 year check coming up, i know it sounds stupid but i am almost scared of asking them incase there is something wrong! i guess i am hoping there are parents out there with little ones who were later in sitting too xx

Well I think he sounds absolutely fine, there can't be much wrong with his back if he's able to pull himself up and stand etc. I know what you mean about not wanting to ask in case there is something but speaking as a HUGE worrier, please believe me that it is ALWAYS better to know, rather than to worry.

You may get people posting on here saying this is normal anyway - my ds sat earlier but he is just one child and there will probably be a thousand different answers to this one!

i hope so, i know cldren do things at different ages and i hate the thought of me saying he is late doing things but 12 months, he is actually late and it is a concern. hoefully there will be loads of mums that will tell be there little ones didnt sit till 12 plus months

yes there probably will be

Also, in your first post you say your ds is one 'in a few weeks'......so he's currently 11 months. At this stage a month or two's development and change can be huge so make sure you are not leaping ahead too much. By the time he is actually 1, he may be doing more sitting anyway!

mummy2t · 03/02/2009 12:09

thanks leo9 you have helped me feel alot better about all of this

I just remember when ds was at this stage, you can't help thinking "well he is nearly.....months old and should be doing this or that" but then in just a few short weeks when you actually GET to ......months old, they ARE doing it!

MmeLindt · 03/02/2009 12:12

My DD did not sit unaided until she was about 16 months and she was a bum shuffler too, she did not crawl at all. She went from going around the furniture to walking without crawling.

He sounds lovely, and completely normal. Try not to worry too much and don't compare him to other children.

The best thing you can do for him at the moment is give him plenty time on the floor, limit the time that he is in the high chair/buggy.

Ingles2 · 03/02/2009 12:17

As Leo quite rightly said, don't worry too much, they all develop differently and it's so difficult with your first, you want them to meet the milestones on the exact day the book says.
a question though, when you say he can sit for a minute unaided, what happens then? he topples backwards or tries to twist and move?
I would definitely run it past your HV at the check, she'll cover this anyway, but I'm sure she'll say he is totally fine.

mummy2t · 03/02/2009 12:17

thanks Mmelindt, yeah thats what we are doing. i think is hasnt helped that in his earlier months after a feed or meal we had to put him in his little chair to prevent him from been sick so he hasnt had as much time on the floor s he perhaps should have. he has outgrown the been sick after a meal thing so finers crossed he will have more time.

I think you do need to mention this to your health visitor so she will check his general growth and development in relation to this

Lots of babies don't crawl though - my eldest just went straight from SITTING (not even moving around) to WALKING at around 13 months

mummy2t · 03/02/2009 12:48

thanks everyone, i am going to make appointment for his 12 month check and mention it to them
ingles2, yeah he sits for a while and then either places his hands down to get himself back on his tummy or he just topples over
