my child crawled at 6 months but at 8 months still can't sit: does this sound familiar

My baby learnt to crawl at 6 months, and at 8 and a half months is still not able to sit. Every time I try and put him in a sitting position he either arches his back and then falls or loses his balance and goes forward and then crawls off. he is able to pull himself to standing easily, and can sit back on his heels to get down from standingg. Going in a high chair is difficult.
Seems strange, anyone experienced the same thing or have tips to help his sitting. Because he is so mobile putting in a ring etc is fruitless as he just climbs off.

I had a quick nose in my developmental dyspraxia book (not because I would worry about that- just because they give motor checklists) and they give 6-9 months as being the age for sitting unaided, so I would guess 8 months is still within the normal range.
It sounds to me as if you just have a very active baby who doesn't want to be sat still. I wouldn't worry too much about sitting practice- maybe try doing something like "row your boat" or piling various toys up in front of him so he sits to examine them.

Sitting will come......I often find if worry about something my ds2 starts to do it about 1 weeks later

My eldest 3 could all walk round the furniture long before they could sit unaided!

SoupDragon · 01/04/2003 18:15

One of the problems will be that he won't try to sit still now he can crawl off It doesn't sound like he can't do it, more like he won't - you say he arches his back before falling over. If he sat quietly and "tried" to sit, he may well be able to do it - try explaining that to an 8 month old though!

Part of the sitting must be down to the shape of the baby - I'm sure it's no coincidence that in my NCT group, the earliest sitters were the shorter fatter ones! (DS1 included) The longer thinner babies were later. They all caught up in the end, obviously, and you can't tell who did what first any more.

Hi Lisa1, my ds was exactly the same. He got it at not quite 9 months. He was just desperate to get moving, I think. Know how you feel about the ring thing - we had to get rid of ours as it was proving a liability!

Gilli · 01/04/2003 22:21

Help - I have a different problem. My DD (No.4 so you'd think I'd know by now!) is 11 months and sitting fine but WILL NOT move/crawl/bottomshuffle or even bear her weight on her legs yet. Absolutely refuses. Anyone out there with a similar experience? I'd love to hear, thanks

My DS could stand up and stand about for long periods, waving a stick vigorously, by 7.5 months -- don't think he was sitting unaided until 3-4 weeks later, though.

Meid · 02/04/2003 13:32

Lisa1 my DD was exactly the same. She crawled the day before turning 6 months but didn't sit up for another couple of months. She was just so eager to get round the room that she didn't want to waste time sitting still.
We didn't try anything to prop her up, it just came in time.

Thanks everyone for your stories, I'm sure he'll get there soon.
To Gilli
my first child was exactly the same, she sat at 5 months, and didn't attempt to move at all until she crawled at 14 months and then walked at 19 months. Its so strange that my two children are complete opposites. My daughter also didn't weigth bear on her legs either. She just soaked up her world, and talked very early. She was checked over by doctor and she has low muscle tone which was probably the reason. she's 4 now and her life is just fine. If you want any more inofr just let me know.

Lisa1 - thanks!

Gilli

Just had another thought, she had a very big head in comparison to the rest of her. Our theory was it was just too hard work to move!!

ds2 is now just over nine months and still not able to sit. moving on a pace with his standing though. Its definately a case of can't and not just won't. He just seems very uncomfortable in a sitting position, and spends his time arching his back to get out of it. He's seeing an osteopath who also thinks he finds sitting uncomfortable , and that it puts tension on his back. Anyway we're off on holiday soon and trying to work out what would be a good portable high chair for him. i also thought of a "bumbo" seat for on the beach. Has anyone tried it with a crawling baby?? Its so strange worrying about him not sitting, when with dd1 we worried about her only sitting and not moving. Next time round I'll have a text book baby!! How boring.

Thanks all

my little girl is 7 months old and she has not shown the least bit of interest in trying to roll over she goes on her side and then rolls on to her back agains any suggestions.

badjelly · 13/05/2003 09:28

Maria, my dd spent hours at a time happily lying on her side and we thought she'd never roll, one day she just lost her balance and went over (something to do with trying to look behind her I think). It kinda shocked her at first but now we cant keep her still although she very rarely rolls the other way. It took about another 2-3 weeks for her to figure out how to roll back again - kept us entertained for hours!
