Perihilar bronchial wall thickening

I have just been told my 6 month old has this. It's shown up on a chest xray and we're being referred. She's wheezed and rattled since birth and wakes continually through the night. Anyone know anything about it?

I can translate the medic speak but probably not tell you the significance (wrong kind of Dr).
It means that the walls of the tubes that take air into her lungs (bronchi) are thickened and perihilar means the ones that are thickened are the larger ones where they branch off from the main tube (trachea).
I think it usually means that there is inflammation of these airways which together with the symptoms you describe might be due to asthma or infection but like I say I'm not a paediatrician.
Hope your appt comes soon and you get some answers.

May or maynot be a reversible finding on X-ray. So may be an current /recent infection but given the history since birth they may be thinking of asthma

Thank you mamadoc and wobblypig. Looked it up on internet and as always, there are some quite scary conditions associated with it. Asthma doesn't sound so bad... GP mentioned CF as last resort to investigate but fingers crossed.

I'd agree with mamadoc.

It's not an unusual finding in children who have or have had a lot of viral chest infections.

Hope your appointment goes well.

She has had persistant cough on and off for months and catches everything DD aged 2 has so that's very reassuring.

My DD is two and a half and has had a persistent cough since 5 months. At a recent check up we also saw reported perihilar bronchial wall thickening and I asked our consultant peadiatrician at the JR about it. He said that any child with a cough or a cold was likely to present with this on an x-ray and it didn't necessarily mean anything sinister. DD had a bronchoscopy that morning to have a proper look in her lungs and everything was normal, so I would not worry too much. Hope this helps.
