DS is 7 and has some little habits - I say poss nervous but he seems to do them even when not feeling nervous.

His main one is a noise he makes - a bit like a duck! - when he is concentrating. Has been doing that since he was little - I think it started with playing cars and making car sounds.

He also chews his clothes - sleeves and collars. As well as ruining the clothes, his mouth is now sore and dry.

Sniffing his hands. Really noticed this one at his school concert before Xmas. He was constantly sniffing his hands.

Any ideas/thoughts? I posted about the noise one ages ago and was advised to leave it and he would grow out of it but he hasn't and now he has more habits!

DH is a bit concerned, well we both are really.

Otherwise he is a healthy normal boy. Would be one of the quieter ones at school but has friends and is happy. At home he is confident and cheeky - just as he should be really.

Try not too worry, Im retty sure these things are normal, we too have had the hand sniffing plus lots of other things.
See this thread about it here - it will put your mind at rest

We were in a slightly similar situation with our DS but he was a tad younger. We eventually got referred, by our GP, to CAMHS. (The NHS Children and Adolescent Mental Health Support I think is its full name).

They were extremely helpful, supportive and understanding of our worries.

The title of the group freaked me out a bit to start with but it was really worth while.

Thanks for the link to that thread Tidgypuds. Glad to know we are not alone but still a bit concerned as DS seems a bit older than most of the children mentioned.

mckenzie - we are in Hungary so not CAMHS here unfortunately.

Maybe I will talk to a doctor and see what they say. Don't really want to bring him and make a big deal of it all and poss make it worse.

Buda my DS only stopped his last habit about 3 months ago and he is 7 he was twisting his fingers around, his teacher commented on him doing it and after a chat with me she said she would give him something to hold whilst they where sat listening to distract him from doing it and that seems to have worked.

If you are really concerned then why dont you have a chat to your GP about it see what he/she suggests. Maybe dont tell your DS or take him or this might make matters worse if it is a nervous tic.

Tidgypuds - thanks for that. Glad another 7 year old is doing it!

I think I will start by talking to his teacher and asking if she has noticed it in school. He was crying last night as his mouth is all red and sore from chewing on his clothes/licking his lips etc and he said he gets teased. Hasn't mentioned it before. I told him that there was nothing anyone could do except him and he needed to stop what he was doing. This morning his mouth looked a bit better and I told him so and said if he managed to not chew etc for 2 days it would probably clear up. Hopefully that will make him think.
