Bed guards for transition from cot to bed

We're about to transfer my dd to a 'big' bed. We're buying a pretty bed but need guards for either side as it's not against a wall. Try as I might, I can't seem to find a suitable guard, they all seem to be fabric. Ideally, I'd like a wooden one or a metal one pref. in white. Any ideas where I can get this type from? Also, how long do you think I'll need them on for (dd is about to turn 3, yes I know we are late but she's been really happy in cot!) Should I worry about them looking nice or just get cheap ones?

Personally I wouldn't bother at all as she's a bit older - just put something squishy on the floor in case she falls out. My eldest is 3.10 but has been in her bed since 18 months without a bed guard. She very rarely falls out and has never hurt herself. I suppose it depends how high the new bed is and what sort of floor she'd fall onto. If you do go down the bed guard route, I don't think you'll need them for long so wouldn't bother with expensive ones.

I wouldn't bother either. We just put pillows/spare duvet next to ds's bed when he moved (at 2yrs) He only fell out of bed 3 or 4 times and each time we rushed upstairs in a panic to find him curled up on the floor still fast asleep and totally fine.

We have the fabric ones and they do a good job. IMO the wooden ones would be very uncomfortable to lie against and the child is more likely to wake up if they banged against one, than a fabric one.

I have a spare one if you want to try it.

I just spotted this thread and wanted to let you know that Lidl are selling foldable bed rail from Monday 2nd February for £14.99. It has a blue fabric edge, but the middle is a white mesh/net. Quite unobtrusive I think and reasonable. It conforms to BS7972 safety standard and is made by Safety 1st.

wouldn't bother, they need to learn how far they can roll before they hit floor - use a bed guard and they will just roll against it and never 'learn' how much space they have. we did as everyone else has said, pillows and duvets on floor - DS1 fell out almost nightly - he's a proper fidget, but would never wake and we just put him back when we went to bed. Then we moved them to bunks and put him in the top bunk as that has sides, not fallen out yet and he's 4 now. (jinxed it now, ready for huge thud tonight as he falls 4ft!)

Did you start two threads by accident Rosa? I'm confused!

ohdearwhatamess · 27/01/2009 16:22

I wouldn't bother. Ds1 just climbed over or round his from the start (thankfully we'd only borrowed it to see if it worked). He's been in a normal single bed since 18 months and has never fallen out.

Thx to everyone, think I will try her with duvet on the floor and see how we go
