Help! DS about to outgrow car seat - which one to pick next?

Have posted here as I think will get more response than in Products

DS will be 3 in May. He is 2st 7lb and his car seat (Britax First Class Si) goes up to 40lb so he is nearly at the max

Although he is tall for his age, he is not ready for just a booster, so I think he needs something in between car seat/booster -high backed booster??

Any help or tips for me please?

TIA

we have a recarro high back booster which can then drop down to just a booster when DD1 is too big for it - has protective things on either side so when she falls asleep her head doesn't wobble about all over the place

I think you're after a group 2-3 high backed booster seat.
When you get to this age the most important thing is not the age guidelines (most say from 4yrs) but the weight and height of your child - he needs to be 15kg sorry I don't know what that is in stone and lb and the only way to check the height is go to mothercare or halfords and try them out

We have the maxi cosi rodi xr

Important things to look for (IMO)

  1. the seat has 'arms' this positions the seat belt correctly across the lap and stops 'submarining' when the belt rides up and the child slips under the lap belt
  2. adjustable head support so the belt guide (which should be 10mm above the shoulder) can be put in the right position
  3. The seat fits correctly in your (and any other) cars you use - you have to make sure you don't have buckle crunch (this movie has a good illustration of buckle crunch)
  4. you can trust your child to sit resonably still and not get out of a seat belt and also trust them not to undo the belt (the arms help obsure the button but they still can reach as ds1 proved)

I also like there being sides to the chair as ds is slim and I think this will help keep him in the seat and safer in side impact

We have a Britax 23 because it was a Which Star Buy last year. You can get them with or without isofix, and they last till 135cms (when you don't legally need a car seat any more).
