14 month old having temper tantrums - help!

I've read a fair bit about older children having temper tantrums but wondered if anyone else is suffering from them this early on?

My 14 month old has been getting stroppy since she was about 10 months, but recently it has started getting worse. She will scream and throw herself back, or throw whatever she is holding onto the floor in a rage. Some days she's fine, other days she has frequent tantrums. I dont know what to do with her.

I have been told that she is quite advanced for her age - she understands a lot of what is being said to her and knows exactly what she wants. Maybe its just frustration at not being able to do something or say what she wants...? The problem is I dont know whether to deal with her as a stroppy 2 year old or try to remember that she is still so little. And even then I dont know how to deal with a 2 year olds temper tantrums because this is my first child!

At the moment I tell her 'NO' and move whatever it is away from her. This often causes an even bigger scene! Is this right?
If she cries because I've yelled do I walk away or console her? Do I just ignore it? I have walked away from her before and she just stood in the hallway screaming for 10 minutes until I went to get her... help!

ameliesmumvic, I know exactly how you are feeling and what you are going through. My DD is 14mo also and started with temper tantrums at about 10mo also.

I try to deal with her as a 14mo and try to understand that it is most probably just frustration. They want to be able to communicate what it is they need/want from you but do not have the means to do that yet.

I also tell DD 'NO', not shout or horrible or anything. I get down on her level so I am face to face with her and tell her 'no'. She is beginning to understand.

We had a breakthrough a couple of nights ago when DD was climbing on the sofa and throwing herself off it, I just went over to her and looked directly at her, and firmly told her 'NO'. It worked (I did a jig )

It is hard and the amount of times I have hidden in the bathroom and cried while she is having a tantrum are numerous. I am hoping it gets better, but have a feeling it will get worse before it gets better lol.

Oh and I have found the best way to stop the crying after you have told her 'no', is distraction. Get a toy out and really go over the top with it saying wow, look at this etc.

I have also before now put some music on and danced around the room singing, it seems to stun her quite lol.
