He's been dry/clean since last easter, very rarely has accidents, then only if very engaged and forgets himself, maybe a dozen since easter, and never pooed.

His nursery teacher says he has settled brilliantly; some days he goes in well, obviously a little bit anxious but is happy to wave goodbye from window. A couple of days he has cried, but been fine a few minutes after we've left him.

There is a hand dryer in their little toilets, and I thought it might be this as he is really scared of them. But he has used the toilets there and been fine. But he has wet himself twice at nursery and pooed himself 3 times at home.

He isn't bothered upon discovery, and am trying to be very relaxed and chilled about it (dh being brilliant, it's stressing me more than him although I'm trying v v hard not to show it). Am utterly bewildered. Any experience/advice would be most welcome.

It's quite common for children when they start school or nursery to regress with their toilet use.

Probably due to change in routine, and the child being so busy and engrossed at nursery with all the new activities they forget to go!

At home his toilet routine will have changed now he is at nursery so you might need to go back a few steps and start with a new routine. You could try sitting him on the loo about 15-20 minutes after breakfast so he can try and poo, or after dinner if he is an evening poo-er. Also ask the nursery staff to offer him the toilet every 2 hours, he might be having so much fun he just needs a reminder to go for a wee.

Thanks sidge, that all makes sense. He's been a bit of a random pooer anyway, but he's all over the place now, as you say, because he's eating lunch much earlier now to accommodate afternoon school. Thanks so much, it's really meade me feel better.

How old is he? I'm guessing 3? It isn't too early to try a little routine (but not rigidly) ie sitting on the loo after a meal, as there is a gut reflex which stimulates the bowel about 15-20 minutes after eating. Maybe offer incentives to sit on the loo eg stickers or a chart, if he is reluctant.

If he can get into a habit of pooing after breakfast, he should then be ok for the afternoon. If he has lots of fruit and veg he might poo again after dinner.

Glad I could help give it time, I bet it settles down soon.

Dd has just had a very similar issue - she's been completely dry since October but wet herself both of her first two days at pre-school. I think she's too nervous to ask adults she doesn't know so well and would probably be too scared to go on her own. One of the staff is now taking her regularly to try and pre-empt any accidents and so far that has worked. She is still completely reliant on them asking her and not vice versa iyswim. Perhaps they could do similar with your ds.

I was just really embarassed as I didn't want them to think that dd wasn't really properly potty-trained when in fact, until now, she's been great!

Not sure about the pooing though... perhaps he doesn't want to go at nursery so holds it in and then when he starts to feel it coming at home he can't get there in time? (Hope that's not too mich info!)
