Smelly 5 year old DS, is this normal?

My DS has a bath or shower every day but for about the last six months or so has started to smell sweaty. Especially after school.

I know they run around alot and do PE and stuff, but I didn't think their sweat would smell until they get a bit older.

I've started to put talc under his arms but feel maybe he should have deodorant.

Is this normal and has anyone got any advice?

I think 5 is way to early to think of deodorants - but not sure what to suggest..does he eat spicy stuff ? does he drink enough water ? am sure someone can help with ideas

Does he wee a lot too?

No-one should need a deodorant when they're only 5!

I thought it's only when hormones start kicking in that a true sweaty smell appears.

Agree with MaryAnn - is he drinking enough? Maybe try one of those lemony soaps in the shower that have "deodorising properties"

He doesn't eat anything spicy. He takes water to school but am not sure how much of it he drinks. He does have a drink after dinner, in the evening, it's usually water or squash or sometimes diet lemonade, that's all though.

that doesn't sound very much liquid going in

I don;t think he wee's alot just average. His wee first thing is sometimes smelly and I make him drink more then but not sure if this coincides with the BO or not. I'll start to monitor it.

I didnt think their sweat glands were mature enough to smell at that age, i thought it was all to do with hormones kicking in.

Wouldnt hurt to get it checked out.

Just had a look at some internet sites and there were loads of people with the same problem.
The advice was to change to Organic Milk as normal milk has some sort of hormones in it which causes the BO. People on the sites had tried it and the problem had gone away.
So I'm off to the shops to buy some now!!!

When I was a girl we KNEW that "all boys smell"

Sounds like he's dehydrated, my 4yo DD can get very hot in school (running around and concentrating) and sometimes smells like a cat in the sunshine at the end of the day!! Really, a kind of earthy smell.
I make sure she has a big glass of water with her brekkie, and brings a big bottle of water to school and has a big glass of water when she comes home (not too close to bedtime though obv.) Does his school allow them to drink during lessons if they are thirsty?

Another thing it might be?
Does your DS have a polyester shirt for his uniform - might be worth getting him natural fabrics.

Best of luck with it.
