ready beds

I want to buy my DS (1 next week) a ready bed for when we're visiting in the evening. He normally just sleeps on a double bed barricaded with pillows to make sure he doesn't fall off but I'm getting a bit twitchy about that these days.

The manufacturer states a minimum age of 2 years. Does anyone know why? Is it a safety reason or is it an assumption that you wouldn't want to use one before then?

My dd started sleeping in her ready bed when she was just 2 and we think its fab as we can take it anywhere... I can only think that it could have an age limit so little one doesnt fall out of bed. Tbh its probably safer for him to sleep on the RB rather than the double one.

That's why I want one

I wondered if it was something to do with the built in sleeping bag and the risk of slipping right in under it...? Does it zip back enough to avoid this?

Anyone else any thoughts?

I had to let DS sleep in one once when we were staying with friends as they forgot to borrow a cot. We put a blanket over the sleeping bag, DS on top and then covered him with a blanket so he wasn't using the sleeping bag bit. Went to check on him and he wasn't on the readybed! He had managed to roll off and roll/crawl around and almost under our bed!

My DD has been sleeping in hers since she was one and a bit, the sleeping bag bit does zip back but tbh we used to stuff a blanket down the bottom of the sleeping back to stop her slipping too far down, the sleeping bag bit is good for keeping them on the bed as Buda found out

the sleeping bag bit is horrible polyestery stuff and doesn't have a zip it is attached (and leaks colour and smells plasticy), i suppose the danger is that a 1yr old might wriggle down in the bag bit then suffocate. you could put him on top in a growbag until he is big enough? the only advantage i can see is the raised sides to the readybed.

Are their other options the OP (and me - subtle highjack!) should be considering when LO gets to big for travel cot and there isn't a proper bed where you are staying?

Thrifty · 22/01/2009 07:39

Littone don't get me wrong. If your lo is too big for a travel cot then they're perfect. Ds slept in his happily for a week when he was 2, but had outgrown it at 2 1/2 (my first ready bed). I cant say for the bigger ready beds. However if you were handy with a sewing machine, i'm sure you could make a nicer cotton cover for it. The polyester made ds very sweaty, hence the colour running, but it wasn't thick enough to keep him warm when the temperature dropped.

i know lots of people have used them that early and been sucessful but my dts really didn't settle in them that early. They jsut kept ending up all tangled up somehow or on the floor! They actually preferred being squashed up in their travel cots.
We actually jsut tried the ready beds again recently and they have finally got the hang of them, aged 3!

We have the My First Ready Bed for DS very tall 2.6YO and he still has a bit of room to grow, not much but a bit. The cover is not very thick but I just put a light fleece or something over it to keep him warm.

My little cousin almost suffocated in one of the junior ready beds that don't have the rolly bits at the side, he was in the sleeping bag and managed to roll over with bed ontop of him and the mor he tried to get it off the further he got tangled in the sleeping bag thankfully my aunt heard him struggling. He won't even go near one now 3 years on. He was 3 at the time. So I'd advise a my first even if he will grow out of it quicker.
