Dd writes and draws backwards

She is 4. In the last month or so I have noticed that when I write her name for her to copy (which is most days) she will write the letters in the right order, but write them going right to left, so (not real name) Chloe would be eolhC. This morning she was watching a programme on ceebebies where they encourage you to copy the picture they are doing. It was a spaceman and she drew the head but then drew the body on the top, but the right way up iyswim. If you turned it over the picture upsidedown have been perfect. I don't really know why she's doing it, maybe she is just challenging herself??? Is it something I should mention? So far I have said nothing to her about it.

my 4 year old does this too, perfectly normal. up until last year my 7 year old was still reversing the odd number as well.

ramonaquimby · 14/01/2009 18:37

(should say I'm a teacher, and it IS perfectly normal for kids to do this when first starting out)

CarGirl · 14/01/2009 18:38

someone explained it to me that a Bus or a car is still a bus or car with it us upside down, bakc to front or on its side so to them it is irrelevant whether the letters are in the correct order or reversed (or both) it still says "chloe"

My dd3 still loves writing backwards and she's 5 and in year 1!

Joolyjoolyjoo · 14/01/2009 18:40

Our friends' dd did this- she wrote a perfect mirror image of the words until she was in about P3. My dd had lots of workbooks from nursery which seemed pointless, but were apparently designed to teach them to become accustomed to going from left to right- I'm sure it will be fine, but if you were worried you could get some?

Miggsie · 14/01/2009 18:41

DH did this so much that his school labelled him as "stupid" as he was working class!!!, But actually he is one of those extremely clever left brain people who excels at Maths and sees numbers as colours, (he is also a very talented artist)...this talent for maths was not spotted until secondary school in his case, but this was 20 years ago.

DD used to do this but has now gone "normal" (aged 5).

Leonardo da Vinci wrote backwards all his life...so either your DD is a genius or will grow out of it!

Littlefish · 14/01/2009 18:41

Draw her a dot on the left hand side of the paper to show her where to start writing. She will have to go towards the right as there isn't room for her to go left (if you see what I mean).

Tis perfectly normal!

noonki · 14/01/2009 18:44

my 3 year old always 'reads' books upside down

and he imo is perfectly 'normal'

brainfreeze · 14/01/2009 18:49

noonki Your 3yo can read ????? Wow ....

keevamum · 14/01/2009 18:49

Is she left handed by any chance? I have noticed in my teaching career that it is more common for left handers to do this, something about they need to see what they are writing...however, as others have said it is pretty common and they will stop doing it eventually.

littlelamb · 14/01/2009 18:51

She's not left handed no. She is busy doing a massive aquadraw picture now (£1 in the charity shop today- bargain ) but she isn't doing it all the time. Glad to hear its normal though

ds used to do that at 4 too. He would write right to left and back to front..so you could hold them up to the mirrow and read it perfectly.
Little lamb is your dd left handed? my ds is and i think it seemed more natural for him to write right to left. He would also naturally want to form a circle in an anti clockwise direction so i think it made more sense to him to write his letters as 'mirror writing'

wingandprayer · 14/01/2009 18:59

my 4 year old dd does this too so am very reassured by thread. I figured she was showing she had learnt the patterns of shapes just has to perfect the order for word and 'get' that words work left to right.

lilithxx · 14/01/2009 19:17

My son writes and draws upside down. He draws people with their legs sticking in the air. He's a fab reader though.

Cosette · 14/01/2009 19:35

my 11yr old DD did that as a 3 or 4 year old. Someone said it meant she had good spatial awareness or something. She just came top in her science test today! She is bright but not excessively so.

noonki · 14/01/2009 19:45

Brainfreeze - No he can't read! I meant 'read' as in 'mummy I'm reading a book' and looking at it jabbering to himself
