Teaching ball skills etc to my 2.5yr old DD

I hated PE at school, I was useless and was ALWAYS picked last.

So I really want to give DD a headstart by teaching her how to throw and catch a ball well, etc.

Except that, how? Useless at PE, remember?

DH is reasonably sporty, but he always forgets that shes 2 not 10 and shows her things that are obviously too hard, and she gets fed up.

Any advice?

I have no 3d vision so I find it impossible to catch

I needed to get rund this top help teach my children to catch

I use a balloon, it goes slowly enouh for them to have a chance at catchin it.....and me

My ds goes to Little Kickers and absolutely loves it. Dh says there are lots of girls that go as well.

Balloon is clever, and I'll check out "Little Kickers", thanks..

Anyone heard of or tried "enjoy-a-ball"?

children do not have the capacity of hand eye coordination until 6 years old. Just be very active, little kcckers is a rip off. Do lots of throwing and catching, play in the garden, just be an active family. Buy things for your garden like bats, balls, swings, slide, skipping ropes. Im a PE teacher and I have never taught them to throw and catch at such a young age, just play throw and catch.

Okay, playing throw and catch, I can do that.. But should I show her how to catch? She just sort of stands there with her arms out and looks surprised when she doesn't get the ball.

And if I should show her, then how should she be doing it?

Honestly, I am still as hopeless now as I was at 8.

I second the balloon idea. My dd is thrilled that she can throw and catch a balloon and keeps insisting on wowing us all with another demonstration .

Ok, just get her to cup her hands for catching. Children cannot percieve timing when catching. When you and I catch we can look at the ball coming, judge how fast its coming and where its coming from, so that we can prepare to catch. Children do not develop this until six.

Thanks Cascade. You should have been my PE teacher!

And what about when shes throwing? She sort of hurls it, and it ends up on the floor. Should I show her how to aim?

Get her to swing arm like a pendulum starting from back to front. Just lots of practice, make a target with your hands, so that she can try to throw at. The best advice I could give is to just be active as a family and play lots of games. If you would like your dd to play football, find a junior club in your area. Much much cheaper than little kickers. My dd plays football.
