TOILET TRAINING STANDSTILL!

3 years and 4 months ds understands about going to the toilet, and if he wears nothing on his bottom half he'll take himself off to the toilet, so we know he's got the control. As soon as he has a nappy on he will wee and poo in it, he freaks out when it's time to change him, and underpants are a no go zone, he won't entertain them at! Sticker chart don't work, rewards don't work - anybody out there got any advice please, we are struggling with trying to understand and find a way around this!

Let him go naked all the time

three years and four months is still within the average age for potty training for boys so perhaps he is just not quite ready? Is he at nursery? Does he see you using the loo?

Have you tried letting him choose some special pants?

My DS is having a few issues now but (a year ago) when he first started to use the potty what happened was he spotted some Thomas pants in the shop - I bought them for him - he wanted to wear them and we had a chat about wees having to go in the potty. He had a couple of accidents (of both kinds) and that was that. I didn't use stiker charts or treats as I didn;t think it would work although my sister sucessfully used chocolate buttons so I guess it depends on the child!

(He's had a few accidents in the intervening year and almnost as a one year anniversay of his original potty training he has now regressed - he waits till the last moment then insists I take all his clothes off, thus often not quite making it......)

I'm glad I'm not the only one having trouble with their DS over toilet training. My guy is 3yrs 8 mths, has been in pants during the day now for about 6 months, but still has days where he wets anything up to 3 times, and also poos his pants. I am at the end of my tether as to what to do with him. I tried the toilet training balls that go in the toilet bowl, worked for about a week for wees, but still the same on the poos. I have him in pull-ups at night still as I still have a 6 yr old dd who occasionally wets her bed, and I don't have enough sheets to be changing 2 beds a night, nor the energy, as I work full time. So on reading you post, I empathise completely!!!

Yes, don't let it bother you, peer pressure ensures conformity

doesn't it just MrsBD, i had a friend who constantly kept saying is he out of nappies yet, is he out of nappies yet? I started to get paranoid - no longer a friend now (but not over that too long a story and I don't want to bore you all)! I figure he'll start properly when he's ready, but in a way Ihope it is sooner rather than later lol

People are very funny about potty training aren't they?

In the toddler taming book Christopher Green (who is an actual paedeatrician (sp) so I trust him more than other sources!) notes that boys up to six or seven often have some porblems with their wees and that a doctor would not investigate till that age.

Another book (I forget which one unfortunately but I liked it!) says that you shouldn't ever even train you should just let your child do it in their own time. They will all choose to use the loo at some point - this point could be anywhere between 2 and 4. (or according to some scary people 1.5 - really?)

So go with the flow, I get fed up cleaning up wee after DS has done one of his store it up for 24 hours then pee all over mummy but I have faith that he will grow out of it so take heart.
