DS2 is 7 weeks now and still no sign of a smile

What age is normal for that first smile and when did your lo's do it??

There is no 'normal' as such

Dd about 4 weeks - at me

Ds about 7 weeks - at the huge pile of ironing, or rather his first coo type noise

It happens more regularly at a few months

I love gummy grins!

about 6ish weeks is average I think, so you must be due one pretty soon

Ceebee74 · 09/01/2009 21:16

Oh DS2 coos at me quite a lot - does that count as a 'smile' then?

I love gummy grins too - that is why I want to see one

gummy grins a bit later I think. First smiles are tiny quick little things!

FfreckleFface · 09/01/2009 21:24

Little Ff was about 10 weeks. I was starting to worry a bit, as MIL had told me she was concerned about her eyesight as 'she should have smiled by now'
Don't worry about it, or you might end up being relieved to see the first one like I was, rather than delighted, as I should have been.
She is now 10 months, and has a wickedly cheeky little grin.

DS1 - 12 weeks (he was bloody grumpy up to 10 months)
DS2 - 5 weeks (ahhhhhhhh)

LolaLadybird · 09/01/2009 22:41

About 7 wks I think as I remember that DS wasn't smiling at the 6 wk postnatal check but did so soon after. First smile was for MIL who was staying with us at the time - I remember thinking 'bloody typical, I'm the one up feeding you umpteen times at night and yet you go and smile at MIL first'!

Oops.

My first 2 dds were around 4-6 weeks.DD3 came out smiling .I kept telling the midwives about it and they were. Then on their last visit when she was 10 days old she gave them the biggest grin with her eyes smiling too they were quite shocked. And no it wasn't wind.
She's the smiliest baby everyone comments on it.Has just started teething and also has quite a temper too it seems.Perhaps she's just in touch with her emotions .

God, my DS was a grumpy one and cried pretty much through the first 4 months of his life and had no smile for anyone! I remember worrying about it at that time... But he is now 10.5 months old and laughs/smiles all the time! He has a wicked sense of humour... So try not to worry too much. They make up for it later! ;)

TheCrackFox · 09/01/2009 22:59

Squachette, snap. DS1 smiled at, DS2 smiled the day he was born. I nearly dropped him with the shock of it.

snoopyatemyblanky · 10/01/2009 04:12

My LO smiled at 5wks. She's a very happy smiley baby and will give anyone that gummy little smile if they look at her.

Agree with others, no need to stress, we're all different and my best friend's bubba smiled at 10wks and he's happy and healthy.

ILovePudding · 10/01/2009 05:20

dd was about 4 wks, although my mum insisted it couldn't be and she was just windy

there are so many milestones to worry about as a parent! dd seemed to sit unassisted later than the other babies. there usually isn't anything to worry about though and they all catch up in the end!
