ds (3) has been potty trained now for 4 months, but when he poos I do still clean his bottom.
he is due to start nursery in 2 weeks time, only 3 afternoons a week, but it has dawned on me that i need to teach him.

oh errm
ds was about 5 before he could do it properly despite being potty trained at 2.
I think it really depends on the child tbh (dd could it from 2)...and how good their manual dexterity is and also (as in all things) how much it bothers them. The wet wipes (plus lots of nagging) helped with ds in the end.

My two ds's were about 5.6 when they tried it themselves. It would have resembled a 'dirty protest' if I'd let them do it before then. When you do start, def use wipes rather than just paper. Good luck !

I work with pre-school children and most of them can now wipe their own bottoms, though it was a different story in September! The trick is to scrunch the paper up and to let them do it first, then to check if they need any help. The times that they have got paper stuck between their cheeeks!! You are right to help them to learn this essential life skill. Today I had a discussion with my pre-schoolers and I asked them what to you think you will do at school? One replied "Wipe your own bum" Because I always say to them that they will need to do it themselves at school. Most of them can do it themselves. Parents are keen for children to be able to write and read before they go to school, but honestly, being able to wipe your own bottom is ,in my opinion, more important, as is being able to blow your own nose and put on your coat and shoes.

what's to dread really? They get poo on their hands or their clothes? It all washes off it's all part of the learning process!!
