Is 14 months too young for shoes?

Probably sounds like a ridiculous question, but I'm not sure what to do. DD has just got her first pair of shoes, they definitely fit her so I don't think they hurt, but she screams the place down whenever I put them on her. She's been walking since she was 10 months, but as soon as I put her shoes on her, she reverts back to crawling as though she doesn't think she can stand up in them.

Did any of your DC hate shoes the first time they wore them? Is this normal and something I should persist with and hope she gets used to them? Buy her some different ones? Give in and try again in a few weeks or months? Any advice gratefully accepted. TIA.

My DDs have always loved shoes. From the moment they first got them they were like little Imelda Marcos's and would wear shoes whenever they could.
Have you tried with a pair of slippers of something? Maybe something softer might be a good interim step?

can you get the fit checked? even "reputable" places can sell you stuff that's totally off, esp. inexperienced fitters. does she have any soft shoes? slippers? socks? when dd2 got her first shoes she used to stop every couple of steps and touch them, as though they hurt, but she was just getting used to them. one last thought - she did this much more when she got hand/foot/mouth and clearly they did hurt her then 0 any chance she's got sore feet for some other reason?

if none of these apply i'd just persevere, put them on her often, take them off if she makes a fuss, i guess if she's already been walking for 4 months it'll take a bit of getting used to.

What was she wearing before?

Dd was always thrilled to wear new shoes at that age.

Thanks very much for the replies. She had some softer shoes that were more like slippers really, but they were easy to pull off, so she never kept them on for more than a couple of minutes. I think I'll have her feet measured again anyway.

What about walking outdoors though? She must have had something slightly more solid underfoot?

mamadiva · 04/01/2009 23:19

Maybe try Clarks Cruisers?

They are fab my DS had problems at frst walking in solid shoes they seemed to clumpy so we got him cruisers which have a really bendy rubber sole and are lighter weight.

Only thing is though they are not meant to walk in alot more for going round furniture
but are okay for light/moderate walking outdoors.

And no 14 months isn't too old, IMO, my DS never wore any sort of shoes until he started to walk so he was about a year when we got him shoes,

Ds has had shoes since he was 10mo, when he was starting to walk with help. He doesn't like to keep them on for long but he doesn't scream the place down either - does your DD have very sensitive feet? Is she fussy about other items of clothing (e.g. hats, gloves)?

DS isn't keen on the heavier, thicker shoes either - too clumpy - but he's getting better with them.

meandjoe · 05/01/2009 06:32

my ds loves his shoes although isn't keen on having them put on as iot means he has to sit still for a minute! but he has always loved walking in them and does a little dance when he first gets them on. i would deffinitely get the size checked again but also remember that they are a completely new feeling for her so it will feel strange for her to have them on. i'm sure she'll get used to them in time. also reccommend the cruisers, they were my ds' first shoe when he was11 months and just walking, they are really light weight and sort of ease them into wearing shoes gentley. he wore them outdoors for ages and they are really sturdy nd well made. i've only just changed to walking shoes a week or 2 ago because his feet had grown.

dd (then 14m) sat down and howled in the first shoes we tried on her
they fitted fine but as she was a 4 and walking well they'd put her in 'walkers' and the soles were too stiff for her
Like MamaDiva and meandjoe we tried a pair of 'cruisers' which were less structured and much more flexible and she was fine. They're fine for outdoors too - dd's been out in the snow today in hers.

I don't want to sound silly, but if she cried when she walked about in them in the shop, why did you buy them?
