Almost 4 year old that sleeps TOO much? Should I worry?

I hope this isnt insensitive to those who dont get much sleep as I am beginning to get worried that my DS sleeps TOO much

He will be 4 in February and regularily sleeps at least 14 hours a night.

I work full time and he goes to nursery and has since he was 6 months. We get home about 5.15-5.30 so I cant get him into bed any earlier than I do which is 7-7.30 pm, and I have to drag him out of bed every morning. At weekends he lies in till about 9-9.30 as a matter of course- but twice over Christmas he was in bed till after 10am, and once it was 11 am.

This has been going on since August. We went to see his GP who felt he was otherwise fit and well and ate properly so there was no cause for concern, and no need to run any tests (I tend to agree as I would rather he didnt have to have bloods done or anything without need) but we are now 4 months on and he is still the same

During the week I have to drag him kicking out of bed at 8am and I am almost always late for work because of this.

Does anyone else have a LO that sleeps as much as this that can reassure me it is normal please?

BTW he has asthma which is well controlled with steroid inhalers and an innocent heart murmur if that makes any difference.

Thanks

oh he sounds just like my DS2 (just turned 5) he can sleep for England! And always has done. Even at 5 he will sometimes have a nap after school and then sleep 8-8 - I often leave him and get him up at 8.20 - but if I left him to wake up on his own it would probably be well gone 9.

pocketmonster · 04/01/2009 16:51

My DD1 (age 4.5) sleeps 12 - 13 hours a night and on nursery days (it will be school days from next week!) I have to wake her up and she really doesn't want to wake up. She sleeps until about 9 on weekends, not later unless she has gone to bed late.

I wouldn't worry, some kids need lots of sleep!

Littlefish · 04/01/2009 16:57

My dd is like this. I took her to the HV but she said that some children just need (and enjoy!) more sleep. She said that we should just make the most of it!

All holidays, dd has gone to bed at 7.00pm and slept until 8.00 - 9.30am. I'm dreading getting her up at 7.00 on my work days!

muminthecity · 04/01/2009 19:48

My DD is the same, she's 3.4 and goes to bed during the week at 6-6.30pm, then I have to drag her out of bed at 6.30am for nursery/work. At the weekend she goes to bed at 6.30-7pm and won't get up until about 9.30-10am. She's fit and healthy and perfectly happy, just loves her bed!

Oh thanks guys!!

Its so reassuring to know there is nothing benign and just that he takes after his mum in loving his sleep!!

Thanks for your time

I find myself being very careful about what I say to friends - I don't want them to think I'm bragging!

Is this a permanent name change Slouchy?

ChubbyChub · 05/01/2009 21:11

My 4 year old sleeps 12 hours a night and still naps for 1+ hours in the afternoon!

I don't know how he's going to cope with school lol.

midnightexpress · 05/01/2009 21:12

Is he otherwise perky, once he's up?

One of my friends has a ds who was sleeping loads and really done in by the end of the day and it turned ut to be an iron deficiency - sorted out very easily with small diet changes and maybe a supplement. It only clicked for her when she gave blood and they discovered that she was anaemic. So might be worth checking out?

ebeneezer · 05/01/2009 21:12

Yes I think so. Quite like it! What do ya reckon?

jingsjosie · 05/01/2009 21:16

My 3yo is like this too. Regularly sleeps 13 hours and has to be dragged out of bed on work days to get to nursery. Has slept until 10am on occasion too.
Enjoy it. I do (but don't talk about it much amongst friends for fear of icy stares)

Littlefish · 05/01/2009 21:32

Good, but I'd like to see more eeeeee's

ie. Ebeneeeeeeeezer

or even EbeneeeeeezerTheGeeeeezer

UniS · 05/01/2009 21:34

10-14 hours seems to be the "normal" range. the 10s are ones annoying their parents by waking at 5.30, the 14s annoy in the other directin by being almost impossibe to get out the house at a sensibe time in a good mood.
Can you tell I have a 13-14 hr a night boy.
I've picked a preschool with a 9.15 start, no way would we manage an 8.45.
Left to sleep in a quiet house he will regularly go to 9.15 or even 10am. from a 7.30 bed time.

ebeneezer · 05/01/2009 21:35

Too many eees makes me think of Ebeneeeezer Goode by the Shamen

Eeeezer Goode!
and all that.

sorry for the hijack on your slightly worried thread dreamgirl!

dreamteamgirl · 05/01/2009 22:59

No worries on the highjack! LOL

I agree about not telling people- the icy stares and 'why the hell do you worry?' thing is familiar.

It did cross my mind about iron- did your friend give a tablet or just try and up it naturally?

Thanks all
