worried about toddler always wanting to hold something

sorry about unsnappy title, but a bit worried about my nearly 2 year old. Whether its a cuddly toy, a sticker or train ticket he always seems to want to hold something in his hand. I know its hardly the end of the world but it seems a bit strange and makes doing things like puzzles a bit tricky!

Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks

Awww, little love.

No experience at all I'm afraid, but I think if it was my dc I wouldn't be too worried at this stage. Just one of those quirky toddler things, I reckon.

It sounds normal to me, it's a comfort thing. Many children have their favourite blanket that they take everywhere with them.

my ds is the same, 16 months, never just happy to look at something, always has to have another toy/ stickle brick/ teddy in his hands. he seems to need a lot of stimulation, that's what i put it down to anyway, always has to have his hands busy, even in the car/ buggy. i wouldn't worry too much i think at this age they sort of see with their hands iykwim?? they are still learning about dimensions and how things feel, my ds has been like this since he discovered he had hands!

purplemonkeydishwasher · 02/01/2009 10:56

my ds is like that. though usually it's his willy he wants to hold.

purepurple · 02/01/2009 11:01

this is fairly common behaviour, mostly among boys I've noticed, boys and their need to hold on to something all the time!

WowOoo · 02/01/2009 11:17

Mine is exactly the same as this. It's usually one of his toys but sometimes a book or piece of paper.

piscesmoon · 02/01/2009 11:19

I wouldn't worry or comment on it-it is probably just a phase.

Thanks for your reassuarance. But between wanting to fiddle with things and his love of his dummy at night I'm already worried he'll be a heavy smoker by 12!

You should have seen us in town NYE. We'd been to the £shop and Tom was sat in his buggy holding a multipack of Pom bears, dairy milk chocs and a toothbrush!

In the car, he likes to have his lemur and 2 of those beanie cushion things!............................

Oops, didn't mean to post 4 times, lol. Tom leant over the keyboard just as I clicked post .

leoemma · 02/01/2009 13:37

my ds is 3,6 and has to have something in each hand at all times. My dd now 16months always has dummy and beaker one in each hand! If item is put done another item will replace it. Very strange little people my two are!

ThingOne · 02/01/2009 13:47

My 2.7 year old loves to carry things around all the time. Perfectly normal!

PaddingtonBore · 02/01/2009 13:48

Another one here. 22mo DD's favourite phrase is "want to carry it".
