What age did you let your dc have a hot water bottle to bed at night?

Help settle a differenc of opinion between dh and I. Ds (4.1 yrs old) wants to have a hot water bottle in bed. One of us will let him have it only to warm the bed but won't let him`keep it with him overnight(worried about hot water etc) the other thinks it would be OK to let him have it to sleep. Ds has a warm monkey with a wheat bag inside that you warm up in the microwave but ds complains that he can't feel the heat ( and in fact itr isn't as warm as a hot water bottle)

It is an issue at the moment as our boiler has broken and won't be fxed until 29th so it is a bit cold at night.

Earlier this month our heating broke down. We live in a gable end terrace and DS's room is on the gable end so it was freezing in his room.
We gave him a very warm (hot) water bottle when he went to bed, encased in a furry dog shaped cover. DH screwed the top on (Geoff Capes could not have got it off) and took it out when we went to bed (it was usually cold by then anyway.
DS is 3

ok thanks for the reply. I personally think that ds will be ok with it and would remove it when we go to bed but dh is a bit nervous so we haven't done it so far as as we tend to dweer to the more nervous parent in any given situation where safety is involved. I was just wondering if I was being too blase.

I'd recommend one of those cuddly covers though - it stops the bottle being too claose to their skin and helps retain the heat a bit longer too

Oh yes we have ones with furry/fluffy covers.

Thanks again

I'd say he would be fine. We've given ds one from age 3, always making sure it is very very tightly sealed mind you. We didn't do the stern warning thing about opening it though, as that would have meant he would have tried it!

No problem - have a lovely Christmas!

My DC's have microwavable cuddlie toys with a lavender bag in them. Would have thought they are safer than a hotwater bottle.

Was going to suggest a wheat bag of some sort. Most childrens ones come in cuddly form

christywhisty · 24/12/2008 10:50

like these

Iklboo · 24/12/2008 10:55

OP says her DS has a wheat bag cuddly monkey but he says he can't feel the heat

mediocrebronze · 24/12/2008 11:04

Sorry I meant to say take th bag out and wrap it ina twoel or something
