Is this clever or perfectly normal?!

I don't want to sound precious and obviously it doesn't matter whether a kid is 'clever' or not, and what age they develop certain skills is no measure of intelligence, I know, I know, I know... So bearing all that in mind, please don't flame me, I'm just really curious to know if this is advanced for this age or whether loads of babies can do it

Anyway, DS has just turned 15 months and he can draw circles, straight lines and dots on command. I don't remember DD being able to do anything like that so young and her fine motor skills took a while to come (but she's like her mother and is hopeless at anything arty ) We're all rubbish at art in my family and have no hand/eye co-ordination at all, so I'm really curious to know if this might mean that DS will be different or whether all kids can draw circles at 15 months...

hmmm, yes my dd could draw circles and dots at about that age (remember thinking it was quite young) but has only just started drwaing lines (she 2.1)

Saying that she hardly uttered a word until very recently so i was too busy worrying about her being behind in that!

think some kids just 'get' certain things earlier (eg drawing) and not others (eg talking) and it may or may not be a sign that they will be talented in that area later. Hard to say.

Sounds advanced for his tender age. Neither of mine could do it, but then again, I never tried them on such a specific task.

Dropdeadfred · 24/12/2008 08:49

My dd1 and dd3 could but dd2 couldn't.
She is very artistic (dd1 got A* in art gcse this year) dd3 ...is stll only 3 so I will wait to see....

Have you been leaving him to watch hours and hours of squiglet by any chance?

Try him with a zig zag.

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 24/12/2008 08:52

well none of my DS's could draw those at that age, on commaned or not. DS3 is 19 months (today!) and just skirbbles randomly.

lindenlass · 24/12/2008 08:56

Bright IMO. However, younger siblings usually IME start drawing etc. much earlier than the older ones because they've got someone to copy! And every child is different too - I have one v. v. v. creative child who is pants at letters but another who isn't at all interested in drawing but who is very ahead in maths and literacy.

SpecialOffer · 24/12/2008 08:56

My ds who is 17 months cannot do that! He eats the crayons, mmmmmmmm

Tinkjon · 24/12/2008 14:05

What's squiglet?!

re. zig-zags, this was a bit of a LOL actually - I was trying to teach him (he loves making pen marks) and as I was doing the zig zag I said "up, down, up, down..." then when I gave him the pen to copy he repeatedly lifted the pen up into the air and down again saying "up - down - up - down" so he's not that clever

LOL I stopped having the time to notice what any of mine were up to after dc 4 was born.

My thinking to whenever anyone says that a dc of mine is very bright/ very good at....... is " yeah, maybe they are maybe they are not, time only will tell"

DD1 could recognise and draw all of her shapes by 18 months. The HV was amazed at how 'advanced' she was at her 18 month check, she is still bright but not G and T.

DD2 is now 18 months and struggles to draw on anything other than herself and the carpet.
