dd started to count but in twos?

ok, dd is 17 months and i haven't been teaching her to count but she has a jigsaw with numbers on and i always count the highchair tray notches as i push it on and she points to the numbers.
so now she has started saying 2,4,6, as she picks things up or puts them down like she is counting them but in twos.
is this weird?

Wow - no, I'd say very intelligent! She obviously gets the idea the things have value, and the sequence...

Sounds like a really smart girl

ilovetochatupsanta · 20/12/2008 14:52

she knows it's a sequence i suppose but why is she missing 1 and 3, if i say to her what about 1 she says 2, like 1 doesn't exist?

blimey, your dd can count???!!!!!! i wouldn't care if she was counting in 2's 3's or hundreds! that's pretty impressive at 17 months! my ds is 16 months and can barely say 3 words!

suwoodolf · 20/12/2008 16:39

My DS is 2 and can count . He says 2, 2, 2, 2, 2. . The funny thing is though- he says the numbers in the same 'tone' as we count to ten, just with the number 2.

ilovetochatupsanta · 20/12/2008 16:50

so i shouldn't be worried then that she only likes even numbers
hi treeandmistlejoe [waves], dd never stops talking, she is like a porrot and repeats a word out of every sentence we say, it's hilarious.
yesterday she met a boy called aaron, she said hello aaron and then later in the afternoon her nan said what's that boys name and she said no idea. we all cracked up.

My dd's 19 months and thinks the sequence goes like this:

"one one one four five six one one eight one ten hooray good girl"

She then claps.

It's normal.

She doesn't 'understand' counting, she's just repeating and in her own way.

She sounds very clever. I'd be proud and not worry at all.

oiwhatsoccurringsantaclaus · 20/12/2008 16:56

My DD is 2.6 now. She counts to 10 but always leaves out 1. She has been doing it about 6mths.

ilovetochatupsanta · 20/12/2008 16:57

thanks snowofhands, it's good to hear it's normal tbh i was a bit worried thinking she wasn't sorting things in her head properly if that makes sense.
dd says good girl to me now and strokes my hair and says aaagh,

it will be funny when they start school and there are no 1s then

My DS1 did this as well. His CM was convinced it was a higher form of intelligence but I wasn't so sure! He's five and can now sometimes count to twenty but mostly not quite that high which is as normal as they come.

SnowOfHands · 20/12/2008 18:07

She sounds lovely. DD is very quick to remind us she's a 'good girl'. Slightly more embarrassing when she says it to me in public, usually in a toilet cubicle. It's nice though. She's like a little conscience, reminding everybody to say please and thank you and shouting 'put away' or 'wash please mummy' if we leave a teacup out.

SpaceTrain · 20/12/2008 18:16

My DD started counting in 2s as well. Completely flummoxed us, but now (at 2.4) she counts normally. Although oddly, she often misses out the number '2'.

ilovetochatupsanta · 20/12/2008 18:41

its strange enough when one of them does it but it's really strange that they are all like it, they must plan it at playgroups to confuse us.
if anyone leaves our house, dd points at the door for them to go and then says coat on hat on,

[waves right back!!!!] she sounds like a very clever articulate little girl! unlike my ds who so far only manages to say 'was dat?' 'cheese' and 'no'!!! lol

ilovelovemydog · 20/12/2008 20:52

She sounds really smart - don't worry. Goodness, she is 17 months - amazing.

ratbunny · 20/12/2008 22:31

for ages, ds counted by saying
1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 etc etc
It was quite annoying because it was so circular, it just went round and round lol

I think they just pick up patterns, however random. Not sure if she ever hears 2 4 6 etc - on the telly? somewhere else?

ds now counts properly to 10, but I SWEAR he used to wind me up by slipping that 6 in the wrong place...

ilovetochatupsanta · 21/12/2008 13:15

i think she remembers a lot of words but gets them in the wrong context a lot. so she has probably just remembered the 2 4 6 and forgetten the other numbers for now.
just got back from her terrorising our friend's fish, she kept saying aagh and i think she wanted to hug it, poor thing.
treeandmistlejoe, i'm sure your ds is very smart, they always know and understand a lot more than they can say.
dd is a bossy madam telling everyone where to sit etc, finishes the best bits of her dinner then points at someone else's plate and says "more meat" and flashes a toothy smile to get what she wants.
everyone keeps telling me its a lovely age but she can be a bloody nightmare
