How can I nurse my daughter back to health ?

Hi, my daughter is nearly 4 and I think she's going down with something. Yesterday she was burning hot but saying she's cold and very tired. She woke in the night with the same thing, today she's been a bit better but she's been having calpol every 4 hours. She seems very lethargic today and tearfull. She's not eating and drinking very much. I've been trying to get her to drink but she'll only have one sip then push it away.
I just wanted some advice as to how to nurse her back to health. When should I be worried ? and when she's boiling but saying she's cold, should I cool her down or warm her up. She was shivering yesterday but so hot to touch.

You can give nurofen as well as calpol to reduce temperature.

It sounds a bit back to front but often with a high temperature people feel cold and shivery,so cool down rather than warm up.

Don't stress about food if she is off it a bit.I usually go for dry toast/digestives and a bit of yoghurt/from.frais if they fancy it.Push fluids as much as possible.

Oh and let her rest. When ds is ill I let him lie on the sofa watching c-beebies

There is sooo much of this type of thing going around. I have a 13 year old with very simialr symptoms.

I would keep trying sips of water, or a drink she really fancies. Ice lollies? I know she's cold but its a way of getting something into her. If you took her to the docs they would probably say its 'viral' which means they wouldn't do any more than you are already doing.

At least if she's poorly now you stand a fair chance of an ill free Christmas!

spudballoo · 14/12/2008 20:27

Erm, don't you think she needs to see a Dr? She could have an infection somewhere...or it could be 'just' flu (poor thing). she seriously needs to drink, don't worry about the food but she MUST have liquid. Bribe with juice, special cups, wine glasses or syringe in.

She sounds very poorly. she should be checked over for obvious infection tomorrow (ears, throat, chest).

What's her temp?

chatee · 14/12/2008 20:29

make her a jelly(if she likes it) as it's easy to eat and contains alot of water and sugars which she will need....

mummyloveslucy · 14/12/2008 20:33

Thank you, I'll try the neurofen too. That's good that she should be o.k for christmas as she's been ill for her last two.

She dosn't have any pain anywere. She's being very clingy and loving. We took her out yesterday, before she became unwell and she cuddled an old lady who we met who said she liked her red coat.

Plenty of ice lollies always help when mine are ill. Hope she gets better soon.

mummyloveslucy · 14/12/2008 20:42

We don't have a thermomiter, but it was probubly very high. When I was feeding her chrisps last night, her lips and tounge felt very warm too. (I only gave her chrisps because that's all she fancied, she hadn't eaten at all all day).

Thank you, I'll buy some ice lollies.
If she dosn't wake up in the night, should I wake her to give her a drink?
her pull up has stayed fairly dry all day.

having just 'nursed'ds for the past eleven days i would gently wake her with a dose of medicine(syringe -great for night time) and a drink(use a straw if it's easier)
even if it's only a few sips it's better than nothing
hoping your dd is better for christmas

She had some lemonade at her friends house last week and has been asking for it at home. I've never let her have fizzy drinks, but I think I might buy some tomorrow.
If she dosn't improve or gets worse, I'll take her to the doctors.

seems so much of it around. Just keep her fluids up, and keep an eye on her temp. Make sure her room is well vented and she isnt getting too hot. HTH

mummyloveslucy · 14/12/2008 21:00

She won't let me strip her off, as she says she's cold. She came in to our room last night asking for a hot water bottle. I tried to take her top off but she got very upset.

if she wants to eat junk and nothing else dont worry or feel guilty about it.

my dr gave me great advice when lo not well recently that any food is better than no food. and tbh he said that high sugar thing would help energy levels. but stickk to plain stuff like ome chcolate buttons. nothing too adventurous or it may come up for a 2nd appearance

and lots and lots of fluids.

if she also has a dodgy tum watch out the lemonade will make it worse. if her tum is fine the liquid and sugar wont do any harm.

good luck.

Thanks everyone, it was quite worrying when she was so hot and shivering. I think you worry more at night too.

if she is cold and shivery her temp is still too high, more meds if possible and a lukewarm bath if she'll let you.

mummyloveslucy · 14/12/2008 21:17

I'll give her more meds, ice lollies and a cool flannel, but a luke warm bath would definatly be out of the question.
