3yr olds and music

My 3.5yr old DD has never shown any interest in music until very recently. We've caught her singing and dancing in her room (a very new devlopment). We thought she might like a little CD player for her room and some cds to sing/dance with.

What does your 3 or 4yr old listen to? One of her friends is into Girls Aloud and top 10 chart stuff. I admit, I do not have a clue about the top 10 stuff anymore. Is there a half way house between Nursery rhymes and Girls Aloud? Any recommendations?

Many Thanks.

My daughter is 6 and I've got her the High School Musical CDs....

what about some ballet music, like the Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky (has Sugar plum fairy etc etc, dance of the flowers), really lovely and memorable.

Also Carnival of the Animals by Saint Saens, a different tune for each animal.

Also Peter and the Wolf (prokofiev). A great story where you listen for the different songs for each animal.

These are very classical but timeless and lovely. and very much the kind of thing you can dance to.

Sound of Music? also some of the other better musicals like west side story have great dancy stuff. Jazz or Latin/Cuban can be great too.

You can also try free tasters of most of this stuff on Youtube to see if she likes before buying the CD..

Disney songs? We've got a 3-cd box for the car. Keeps my 3 year old dd very happy.

dd is 3 and loves the wiggles and Hi-5 mostly I think for the dance routines but she also listens to our music and we don't like bubble gum pop

Turn on the radio and see what she likes?

My ds loves music and dancing but I've noticed he hates anything he deems too loud or violent. But he does like rock music and classical music and music with kiddies words. If she likes music get into it by getting her to tap out the rythm to words like her name, her friends' names, anything really. And take it from there - she'll tell you soon enough what she likes.

There's a boogie beebies programme on tv which my ds just loves.

Baroque music, incidentally, has been associated with higher levels of concentration so try a bit of vivaldi or paganinni (if that's how you spell it) on low volume.
