4-year-old distraught over song - anyone had anything like this?

I was combing DS's hair, sitting on the stairs and started to sing 'Halfway down the stairs' to him. I sang it a couple of times, he asked me to sing it again then burst into tears and howled inconsolably for a few minutes. I could not get out of him what the matter was, he calmed down, then we went and did teeth-cleaning, book-reading, into bed - he asked me to sing it again then cried again.
SOmething similar happened a few months back when I sang Brahms Lullaby to him.
Thing is, my singing is not that bad, (not as bad as the playgroup leader or some of those gibbering loons on Fun Song Factory either) - DS loves music and is very interested in it, but I honestly don't think it was wrong-notes-hurting-his-ears...
I just found this a bit freaky. Has anyone got any idea what might have upset him like that?

Apparently when I was little there was a t.v series about Black beauty and everytime the theme tune came on I sobbed uncontrollably.

And I can remember my brothers always used to cry when the coronation street music came on.

oooh i have just come back to this thread and I do have synaesthesia - was more pronounced as a child and has faded a bit now but still get it with new words. Maybe that is why 2 little donkeys makes me cry as I always get a very strong "blue" sensation which is a sad colour.

Oh yes, Black Beauty!! That made me cry everytime too!! And Seasons in the Sun - the original of course not the Westlife version (must have been 4 or 5 at the time)

There is a theory that certain combinations of notes can make you cry... I think it's discussed in 'Godel, Escher, and Bach'... but I haven't read it (yet).

DD sometimes cries, but mainly at very dramatic stuff such as opera. She has always been very calmed by music in general though, and when she hears something new, she wants it over and over again hundreds of times, so she can learn it.

The crying pieces for me are:
Bridge Over Troubled Water
Elgar's Cello Concerto
Jerusalem

and xfabba yes- for some reason Little flaming Donkey! (DD is too young to have done a nativity yet, so it's not for sentimental reasons)

When I was younger the theme tune to Birds of a Feather (what'll I dooooo when youuuuu are faaaaar awaaaaay) used to make me feel really anxious and give me tummy ache

I used to sing Danny Boy to my firstborn who, weirdly enough is called Danny!!!! I struggled to get through more than one verse because I would sob.

He became a first time Daddy in June. A few months ago I was at his house and he sings to his little lad - 'Oh tiny boy' that made me melt in a puddle of tears.
