4 year old daughter stealing

I found some toy magnets in my daughters pockets yesterday.Neither me nor her older sister had seen them before. After questioning she eventually confessed that she had taken them a shop at the weekend. This week she has also brought some bits & pieces home from school & looked 'sheepish' when I found them.
We have explained the consequences of stealing to her & we have taken the things that she has 'borrowed' back to school. What else should I do? I will take the magnets back to the shop. DH thinks she needs/wants more attention - she has started school this term & no longer gets my undivided attention as she did when we were at home together. I work part-time. Has anyone any experience of this?

I have a 5 year old and he has been known to put things in his pockets and forget. He's grown out of it but its really common in this age group - based on conversations with other parents. Taking things from a shop is a little different but I don't think you can do more than explain what stealing is and make her return the bits and pieces.

Ds3 stole from the corner shop recently (he is 4) we went to the shops ,told the manager (who told him it was nice to have owned up to it but still really bad to steal) what had happened and paid for the item (bubble gums he had already half chewed). He did not do it again but I found myself checking with teachers if the little toy he came back with was really because he was star of the day (which it was). It will take a bit more time for me to accept he will not do it anymore but so far he has not. DH an I also think that he was seeking attention so we did work on that as well as a family.
