DS2 aged 6.9 in year 2 has been on an individual learning plan for the last 9 months. I've noticed improvements in his reading but he still struggles with basic words and has to sound out before he reads eg and, so but can get more difficult words

due to speak to his teacher about his assessment and have been asked if I'd like him assessing for a specific learning difficulty, and I just don't know

he has no problem with learning things and recalling them, is very adept at his games, rules etc but is less able when it comes to reading and writing

I don't know what the assessment would involve, just the word psychologist is a little frightening tbh

also he still isn't dry at night, have spokent to our doctor and he is due to be tested for low level urine infection first before this issue is taken further

any words of reassurance or advice ?

p.s. forgot to say when he writes himself I can understand his words, he is writing phonetically but doesn't spell them correctly, eg he spells love as luv - also have this with my DS1 who is 2 years older, who is very bright and excells at maths

Well there's no harm at all in having an assessment. The teacher wouldn't have brought it up if she didn't have her own concerns.

Why was he put on an IEP in the first place? Is it just reading or were they concerned about other areas of learning?

he was put on to it for literacy, no other areas of concern

Has he been assessed for possible Dyslexia ? Why do they want a psychologist to see him or did you request it ... ? Sorry, soooo many questions

the teacher spoke to me to arrange to see me to go over his assessment, and we chatted briefly about how he was doing, I said I was a little concerned that he still had to spell out words like "and" before he confidently read them (ironically longer words like gingerbread he gets easily) and how words he can read he can't then spell

she then asked me if I'd like him to be assessed by a psychologist to see if he had a particular learning difficulty, she said it was common for children with dyslexia to be able to read the words and not be able to spell them

Get the assessment ... it will hopefully pinpoint where his learning difficulties lie - the sooner the better imo.

God luck
