Okay please excuse the grammar as my day started at 1.00 a.m. this morning AGAIN. My 15 mth DS has had this strange cough for the last month or so. It only happens in the night once he has gone to sleep and there is no sign of it during the day (when he is well that is as he has had numerous colds this year). It sounds like a dry cough (not phlegmy). So hes waking up from coughing or just waking up in general and crying and I cannot fathom why. It is unusual for him as he is usually a fairly good sleeper. He also has a dummy for sleep and was wondering if that may be the cause?

I have noticed him chewing his fingers so thought he may be teething but the whole teething lark is B**dy ambiguous that it could be anything I guess. Any ladies out there whose DC's had the same night time symptoms from teething?

DS has been coughing and teething (he's 2) but I'm not sure if they are related... if he is coughing only at night it's worth taking him to the GP as it might be asthma related. They won;t diagnose asthma at this age (DS has similar symptoms after a cold, as do I) but your GP may prescribe an inhaler to see if it helps. It's perfectly safe to take and may sort the unsettled nights, plus it's a reassurance to have it to hand

and give him some Calpol just in case - DS was awake at 4am but settled happily after a dose and some water. I chekced his mouth yesterday and he does indeed have 3 molars coming though, no wonder he's been grumpy!

My ds (17 months) has had a really bad cough for a week. We took him to dr who prescribed the inhaler, and it has worked, he has now pretty much stopped coughing. He said it isn't asthma, but just a chest infection. Also told us to calpol him every 4 hrs, even if he appeared well.

Thanks EffiePerine. How old was your DS before they prescribed an inhaler? SpecialOffer I havent taken him to GP as he seems well in himself and 100% fine during the day. AM worried now that I havent as he has had night time cough for around 5 weeks!

I didn;t get round to taking him until recently, he's always been a bit chesty after a cold but it usually passed in a few days. So he would have been just over 2. GP said they couldn't diagnose asthma at this age but she was happy to prescribe an inhaler (and a spacer) for reassurance. Pron worth going along to see - they won't think you're overreacting.

My ds was also well within himself during the day, it was a night of no sleep that made us go, as I thought he just had a cough!!
