Repeated explanations and disaproving faces don't seem to be working.

We've tried that.....how many years should we igonre it for?

He's jsut started to learn to write and scraped "DS1 is a fucker" in the ice at the park, then shouted it out.

Agree with mmj. Usually I'd say ignore but he might say it at school.

devoutsceptic · 07/12/2008 13:43

Yup, home from the park and into his room. He is doing it to annoy and upset you and his brother. It's naughty.

smartiejake · 07/12/2008 13:48

I actually wouldn't ignore this from a 5 year old. A toddler who says this is just repeating what he has heard but a child of 5 is old enough to know that it is not appropriate especially when he has been told over and over.

He has not used this word accidently if he has written it somewhere.

I would get tough. No telly, no sweets, take away his favourite toy. etc. (not all three just something he cares about.)

Overmydeadstuffedturkey · 07/12/2008 13:51

I agreee with mmj on this,I don't think it requires long explanations.

If anything, keep it simple. DSis 5, and I've judt told him "that word is a grown up word, and a very rude word, and you are NEVER to use it" in my stern, no-nonsense voice.

Overmydeadstuffedturkey · 07/12/2008 13:53

I do think that by 5 most chldren understand that there are some words that they aren't allowed to use, that are grown-up words, end of.

It's hard, you need to adress it, and somehow find the fine balance between ignoring it and giving it too much attention (like so many parenting issues lol)

LynetteScavo · 07/12/2008 21:39

He picked it up from DS1 about 18 months ago, who learned it at school.

I did the scary face thing about a year ago (I'm very good at it), but it obviously didn't work long term.

DS2 will oftern say "DS1 just said f**r" although I havn't heard DS1 say it in a very long time. I then get cross with DS2 and tell him I don't want to hear it from anybody.

We have told him FC doesn't give presents to children who say that word, but I think that's just reinforced the naughtyness of it.

I have this problem with DS2 and bugger.

Just sympathy really

DoubleBluff · 07/12/2008 21:43

My two DS's are obsessesd by what is a swear word.
I have jsut explained tot them that they will get into sooooo much trouble if Ihear them say it or if they say ti atnschool.
Nad it does seem to have worked.
Although DS1 (aged 8) - has asked if it is OK to swear in his head
I have tod him as long as i dont know about it...

foxinsocks · 07/12/2008 21:46

I'd give him a gold star for writing a proper sentence at age 5. That's v impressive.

Quattrocento · 07/12/2008 21:48

Zero tolerance for this. Ye gods, where did he pick it up from? Is there a way of removing him from that environment? Please say it isn't school...

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 07/12/2008 21:50

and why not ...........??

foxinsocks · 07/12/2008 21:52

if he's shouting it out in public and carrying on with it, he obviously stil thinks it's a laugh.

I would go with the line of how much trouble he will get into at school and you must start taking stuff away from him (ds, tv time etc.) because he obviously hasn't quite 'got it' yet.

And I'd have a stern word with ds1 to check he isn't saying it on the quiet and reinforcing it with ds2!

duchesse · 07/12/2008 21:52

But it is a really funny word, you have t admit. I second/ third etc the quiet never ever say that word again type approaches. He is quite old enough to understand. Also DS1 needs to be reminded of this as well. It could be that he deliberately saying it to your little one to get him to report it and get into trouble. Sibling rivalry can be very sneaky...

foxinsocks · 07/12/2008 21:53

yes, my money's on ds1

Gorionine · 07/12/2008 22:07

My mum would have washed my tongue with soap!
good old days...
seriouly, just tell him it is not acceptable , do not go into longue explanations because he will "switch off" before you finish. A ferm "I do not want to hear tha word in your mouth again" would be my favourite option.

sunnygirl1412 · 08/12/2008 10:40

Tell both ds's that you are not prepared to have either of them use this word, and that using it will either land them on the naughty step, or will result in a punishment - taking away a favourite toy.

You could also set up a reward system at the same time (a carrot and stick approach), where they get a sticker for each day that they don't use that word, and a certain number of stickers will add up to a treat.

LynetteScavo · 08/12/2008 14:04

Much as I dislike sticker charts - I think I'll have to try that apraoch, as I've tried all the the other ideas on here to no avail.
