DS has never been too fussy on breakfast, he will ahve it if/when he's hungry and i've never really forced the issue - but now i'm due to start work a week tuesday so am going to try my hardest to get him sorted out with eating a good breakfast.

some times it will be a yoghurt and fruit, or one or the other, others toast other's cereals.

but what i'd really like him to have is porridge or weetabix so he's not hungry until his snack time. He'll be having a 'proper' hot lunch meal.

he's 2.9mo, s what does your child eat & how do you get them to eat it? oh and he does have a cup of warm milk as well.

Will they not give him breakfast at nursery? DS1 gets breakfast about 9ish at his nursery - but I do give him a 'breakfast snack' in the hour between getting up and going to nursery - usually a small bowl of dry cereal/ricecakes/breadstick for him to pick at if he feels like it (DS1 is not a big breakfast eater either).

SpandexIsMyEnemy · 04/12/2008 08:09

no I think they only give them a snack at about 10 then lunch at 12 - but will double check it today. as I say i'm quite keen he's having a proper breakfast if he's going to be going there from 8.30 - 3.30 3 days a week. don't want him to be hungry as then he won't have any energy.

I completely understand about giving him a proper breakfast if he is not getting one there - guess I am lucky that my nursery give them a proper breakfast as it means I don't have to

What about shreddies?

My dd has either toast, weetabix, shreddies, coco pops, cornflakes or honeynut loops and is always fine until snack time.

Pheebe · 04/12/2008 08:19

Do you sit and eat with him? If not, I would sit at the table with him to have yours aswell, offer his, if he doesn't eat it, his choice, no point making an issue or feeling guilty

bodiddly · 04/12/2008 08:19

Our nursery does breakfast between 7.30 and 8.30 when they first get in. They have a choice of shreddies, rice crispies, cornflakes or wheatabix and then toast. They aren't given milk just water or juice. Mine eats it but then again he has been there since he was 6 months old so he has grown up with it as routine!

SpandexIsMyEnemy · 04/12/2008 08:22

yes pheebe we eat together, but a the mo not a the table (it's too cold in the conservatory where the table is will have to dust out the electric heater again)

until now i've not been fussy if he leaves it he's obv not hungry, but as I say just worried really he'll be hungry after and not be able to have anything 'substantial'

I appreciate the concern, feel the same way myself, breakfast is the most important meal etc. But I still wouldn't make a big deal of it, keep explaining that he will be hungry at nursery if he doesn't eat up and let him discover for himself. I learnt the hard way you CAN'T force kids to eat, you just end up getting cross and frustrated and achieve nothing. The last thing you want is for it (and poss as a knock on...nursery) to become an issue/battle.

Other ideas we tried - offer alternatives (he chooses what he fancies), get him to 'make' his own brekkie, special breakfast bowl

if they don't serve breakfast at nursery then can you offer a banana or some dry cereal for him to eat on the way either in his buggy/car

MissisBoot · 04/12/2008 09:08

DD struggles with breakfast most days and it's difficult when she's at nursery as she just can't face food that early in the morning. Sometimes I give her dried cereal, slice of toast, cereal bar - she would however eat bacon and eggs everyday

I'm not too worried about her not having a decent breakfast as I know she eats all of her snack at about 10ish which is when she/we have breakfast at home on non nursery days and also eats all her lunch.

I agree not to get too worried about it as it could turn into an battle ground which is the last thing you want every morning when you're trying to get out of the house!

My ds2 aged just 3 likes to eat a big breakfast and often has cooked or leftovers. For e.g. this monring he had pasta that had been in fridge from day before heated up again wiht grated cheese and cucumber slices. It really takes no longer than putting out bowl of cereal.

Sometimes he has scrambled eggs, cottage cheese and baked beans which really sets him up for the day. Again, I dont find this really takes all that much longer as in teh early mornings ( he wakes at 6.30am so plenty of time) I'm making other childrens' lunches in any case so I'm in the kitchne for about an hour in the morning and these foodds are easy to quikly heat and cook.

gladders · 04/12/2008 11:45

min aren't big breakfast eaters either.

we don't eat at the table - mornings are too hectic!

ds (4.3) - i offer him a choice of 2things outn of porridge, scrmabled eggs, toast, marmite sandwich or ham sandwich. i think choosing and then being involved in making it are both helpful in encouraging him to eat?

dd (2.3) is only teeny and still drinks milk. she refuses most options - i just put some fruit in front of her and leave her to it but also take a little sandwich with me for her to have in the buggy on the walk to school.

ruddynorah · 04/12/2008 11:47

dd is 2.7. i don't 'get' her to eat anything. i ask what she'd like for breakfast, usually cereal she says, serve it up. if she eats she eats, if not then fine. up to her really.

Nemostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 04/12/2008 11:48

DDs[nearly 2 and 3] dont really eat for me but they go to nursery 2 mornings a week where they are given a breakfast and tend to eat it.

meep · 04/12/2008 11:49

dd's nursery doesn't provide breakfast so I send her in with a tub of cereal and they do the feeding when she is there. They don't havea problem with doing the feeding, it's just that the food isn't included in the deal.

catweazle · 04/12/2008 19:42

Mine has weetabix when she gets to nursery. They provide the milk and I take a box of cereal.

Seona1973 · 04/12/2008 19:49

my lo's (5 and 2) have cereal most mornings - it is either one or a mixture of rice crispies multi-grain, rice crispies, weetos, cheerios and shreddies - they go a for a mixture most mornings and I sit and eat some cheerios along with them.

hotbot · 04/12/2008 19:55

2yr old dds repetoire:
boiled egg with soldiers, or furit and yoghurt, baked beans on toast, porridge, bran flakes+banana, toast.......scrambeld eggs and tineed tomaotes
i could go on . she is a great rekkie eatwr and usually comes into our room demanding breckfast at 5.45
our ursery do toast at around 9.30 for a am snack om sure they would give her her brekkie but there has bever been the need.

hotbot · 04/12/2008 19:57

sorry for rubbish typing -agree with not forcing the issue tho - i think that if they are hungry they will eat

SpandexIsMyEnemy · 08/12/2008 08:09

sorry all forgot about this one.

am going to ask the nursery if I provide a big snack if they'll let him have it at 10am (roughly I think they give it to them) other wise it's literally one biscuit or half a piece of fruit.

I'm not going to make it an issue no, might be worth strapping him into his booster chair as opposed to letting him sit up where he likes at the table? still we got up at the right time today even if he's only had 4 spoonfuls of yoghurt & a few mouthfuls of milk today.
