sitting up when

When should my ds start sitting up on his own? When i put him on the floor he sits for a while then rolls over and has just started crawling.

My mum says he should be able to sit himself up from laying down.

When do they do this?

mands1 you don't say how old your DS is. From your post it sounds like he can sit up unaided which is what is checked for at the assessment (7 months in our area) but not that they can get to that position themselves.

DS was 6 months almost to the day when he was able to sit for a few minutes unsupported. I can't remember when he got to the point of being able to pull himself to that position probably quite late knowing him - he could walk before he could pull himself to standing for instance and never crawled. So yes different strokes.

Don't worry at all mands1 both of mine were totally different, dd1 didn't sit up unaided (without cushions around her till 9 months) whilst dd2 was sit up and trying to crawl at 7 months, all children are totally different and yours will only sit up from laying down when he is good and ready.

Enjoy him whilst he is this young, it won't last long.

Whops my ds is 9mths and rather chubby which is why i think he's having trouble, beer belly getting in the way!

I do worry over him though as he was prem and had a few problems nothing major. You think i would be a know all what with him being my second but i've pnd and it's frazzled my brain.

I don't know if you'd call it sitting unaided as he falls/rolls over quite soon?

Mands1 don't worry about PND I have just being diagnosed with that too. DD2 is my second also.

If you would like ask tech to send me your e-mail and we can chat further.

I recall a line in a developmental book which said "all babies do things at different times. The only 2 things you should concern yourself with is whether they don't smile by 3 months and don't sit at 12 months"... even a week is a long time in baby development. You have three months, and he already crawls! I shouldn't worry if I were you! Don't ever listen to "they should be able to..." (sorry mum)

Bozza · 13/03/2003 21:57

mands1 I think (don't know because DS never bothered) that 9 months is spot on for crawling. And the sitting sounds OK to me too. Have you had teh developmental check with the HV?

chiccadum · 13/03/2003 21:57

totally agree snickers, i know someone who has a child who is 12 months and I have never seen him smile, he is very quiet around his mother but when it comes to a childminder he is very very cling and cries if she goes out of his sight.

I saw him for quite a while the other day and couldn't believe it when he didn't smile once (even when other children were playing with him)

mands1 · 13/03/2003 22:32

Bozza yeah had health check just as he'd turned 8mth.Didn't mention it to HV then as he was 5wk prem so have been told to expect him to be a bit slow.Plus my HV knows about my PND and i don't want her thinking I'm paranoid, both ds's have had various smally ailment already.
