how should i teach my dd to wipe her bum? i am pretty sure from my market research that i dont do mine the recommended way!!! so teaching her is a bit wierd for me.

i know it should be front to back, but does she do it from behind? and can she get her front bits then too or does she need to wipe between her legs for wee and from behind for poos? so confusing!!!

my mum obviously taught me to go between my legs for everything!! iykwim so im not used to this behind wiping lark!!!

should i have name changed for this i wonder?!!

I think it is timescales. Most of us would change a nappy pretty soon after the poo was done, and clean the area thoroughly. Little children on the other hand are not so thorough, so bits of poo are probably left behind for quite a while (I'd guess until bath time) hence causing irritation, and ultimate infection. I would imagine that baby girls who are neglected do indeed get horrible infections.

This is an incredibly informative thread - I had no idea there were so many different techniques lol!

Ha ha Greedy - this is actually a GREAT thread... very informative!

I have to confess I do it all wrong, but never suffer from infections as I am a very careful wiper! I don't think I could reach round and wipe from behind, arms not long enough or back doesn't seem to twist round very well without me falling off the toilet!

I did once read on here that until your child can reach right over the top of their head and touch their ear, then they just physically can't reach to wipe. Dunno if it's true, but I periodically get DD (nearly 5) to do it to check! She's pretty much there, and has to wipe her own bum at school if she does a poo anyway, but prefers the deluxe mummy service if she's at home
