Out of curiosity, at what age roughly do children start to identify colours?

As in pointing to something purple and saying purple, something red, red etc.

I think about 2

Ds1 knew many colours by about 18m, but couldn't identify orange, red and green until nearly 4. Ds2 is 2 and has only just got the concept of colour. He can sometimes pick out pink, blue, or dark green, but that's all.

I am pretty sure DD1 had this sussed by age 2. DD2 is 2.25 and is completely clueless ... she'll say red is blue, green is pink etc. She can identify orange and brown. Was mildly worried in case of colour-blindness but my child-minder friend said this is totally typical of 2nd children. PFB get months of "look at that red car" and so on. Subsequent children don't have that focused training!

How old is yours?

ilovemydog · 26/11/2008 12:48

It depends. My DD (2.3) is aware of colors, but she will point to something red, but say green.

She's a bit of an odd thing - when asked how old she was by the Consultant she said, 'Fourteen...'

wishingchair · 26/11/2008 12:50

If she's anything like my DD, she just has the attitude of a 14 yo

I asked her to get her shoes this morning and she replied "eeerrrrrrr nope" and sauntered off.

19 months - knows a few but boy is he confused by pink and pig (lots of colour books have a pig for pink so he thinks it the same thing).

The second child thing sounds about right!

DS knew them all well at 18m (clearly G&T) but then he was very interested, whereas he couldn't give a monkeys about some things other kids seem to get quicker.

katiek123 · 26/11/2008 13:05

in DD's case, 2-ish i think. DS took loads longer! 3 going on 4 i think (it's all a haze already and he's only 5 ). definitely later than average and my mother was starting to fret. we were pretty laid-back though and were proved right, he is a bright little lad all in all just maybe not a future fashion designer/interior decorator

basementbear · 26/11/2008 13:43

Around 2. I was convinced DS2 was colour-blind for quite a while because everything was "geen", but my friend's 2 year old does the same (except everything is blue!!)
