My DD is 16 months and was a late crawler- started just after she was 1. She is now 16 months and will push her baby walker around a bit and pulls herself up all the time but has never tried to stand on her own, flatly refuses to walk when holding on to my hands or stand up holding my handsetc. I just can't imagine her ever standing on her own or walking!
All her NCT group are running around and she is just content to crawl to what she wants.
DO you think there's anything to worry about or is there anything I can do to encourage her? I'm having another baby in the new year so I'd quite like her to be walking by then.

My dd sat up on her own for the first time at 13 mths crawled at 13.5 mths and walked at 18 mths. Becasue of the lack of progress at 12 mths (she wasn't weight bearing if help upright either) we were referred to a paediatrician for reassurance who said she had low muscle tone and some excessive joint mobility but would be fine longer term just slower on developing gross motor skills.

The physio recommended supportive shoes to help dd feel steadier and give her confidence and that did make a difference - I didn't let her wear them all the time though. At 2 she looks fairly normal for her age walking wise although she is a bit unsteady on rough ground/steps and doesn't run or jump like some of her peers.

I would say not to worry - am sure she will oblige soon and save your back - I kept telling dd she had to walk before our new baby arrived and she did before it got too difficult to lift her!

Ds1, crawled at 12-13 months. Cruised etc but didnt walk on own until 19 months...he literally just got up and walked through 2 rooms to get something. He didnt have the wobbly toddle though either which i guess was because he was later.

DS2 is now 14 months been bum shuffling for the last month only and not pulling himself up yet. Has managed to get into hte crawl position this week but hasnt actually crawled so i guess he will be a late walker too.

DS1 definately talked instead. And it all evens out in the end. Unless you feel something isnt right then dont be worried.

dd2 (18 months) has just seen an orthopaedic paediatrician, because she was not walking (bum shuffler) and we noticed that her feet both roll outwards.

She said that she had overly soft ligaments which would stiffen with age, and that we should buy a pair of solid shoes, especially stiff across the heel of the foot. We had some trouble from the staff at Clarks, who thought she should have cruisers or first shoes, but eventually managed to get some.

Within about 5 minutes of having them on she tottered across the floor, and now is demanding to walk everywhere (holding my hand), even at 3 in the morning

If anyone is worried, ask there hv or gp and ask about a referral.

DD1 walked at 19 months.

DD2 at 17 months (and took ages to get steady on her pins)

I'm talking first steps between mummy and daddy here, not walking around a room.

Friend's daughter walked just after her second birthday.

They are all fine.

dd1 walked "late" - around 19/20 months.

dd2 is similar. Didn't sit or roll til nearly 12 months, crawling fairly recently (she is 15 months now.)

With dd1 we had a fab hv (now retired) who wasn't worried in the slightest. We see a community nurse this time round with dd2, and she called me back into clinic a few times (but seems to be leaving us alone currently. )

She muttered (unconvincingly) about seeing a physio and I said she seems fine, just later than "average". I would accept a physio referral (of course) if there was a need.

I mentioned that dd1 was "late" and she said in a very tone "and is she all right now). I gestured to my dd1 sitting nicely in a chair playing and said something like "see for yourself"

Occasionally there can be a physical problem which delays their walking, but ime this is fairly rare. I would say that anything from 1-2 years is "average" with a big margin either side still being absolutely fine.

dd never crawled shuffled along on her bottom eventually walked at 17 monthsI got myself in a state thought there was somethng wrong with her legs. Ds suddenly started crawling at 7 months can still remember the day he is now 32. He was lying on the floor and suddenly took off saw something of his sisters he fancied he walked at 12 months. Both of dd daughters crawled and walked at 12 months.

TVFriend - see www.mumsnet.com/Talk/behaviour_development/489115-dd-has-done-it-she-s-finally-walking-woooooooohooo oooooooooooooooo. I do feel your pain, but she will get there.

I can completley symathise.
DS was a bumshuffler and walked at 18 months.
It was a nightmare as I he was my first and I felt "compared" to the rest of my NCT group. DD's 1 and 2 both crawled by 10 months so I was sure they would walk earlier but DD2 was 17 months and DD1 was 19 months. I would hold off the cruiser shoes has they are a waste of money and can put kids off as a child starts to walk by gripping the floor with his feet so barefoot is best.
