Left-handers

At what point did you know that your DC was left-handed? Am assuming most babies/toddlers switch round a lot, but wondered when it "settles" in to one or other?

Hmmm, I got pretty sure about DS2 when he was 2, but everyone else wasn't sure until about 4.

But kids (like adults) vary in how ambidextrous they are, so the age it settles down (for right-handers or left-handers) must vary.

DS was 6 before he decided (he's now 7). However he writes with his right hand, but throws a ball with his left. But then DH and I are both lefthanded. DD has always shown a preference for her right hand.

DD1 (10) switched between hands until she was about 6 even writing with both hands at school but dd2 (4) has been a lefty since birth and has never used her right hand for anything, discusting i know but she can't even pick her nose or wipe her bum with her right hand

christywhisty · 25/11/2008 10:50

I know DD was definitely left handed by 2.3 as she badly burnt her left hand then and needed a skin graft. Her hand was bandaged up for quite a few weeks. She used her right hand without much problem, but a soon as the bandages came off she went back to using her left hand.

I knew DD was left handed at around 3yrs. She would pick things up with her left try to write and then move it to her left. Now at 4yrs she will always use the left. Sister and Mum left handed so guessed she might be.

ds seems to be left handed and have noticed this for a few months now (is 2.1years). DD always favoured her right hand

StephanieByng · 25/11/2008 13:44

DS favoured his left right from the word go. Started picking toys up at about five months and always used his left hand. Always took things with his left hand, etc. It was clear with him and hasn't changed, he's now 6.

wotulookinat · 25/11/2008 13:47

I'm left handed and I have a feeling that DS (2) will be left handed. He seems to favour using that one.

horseymum · 25/11/2008 19:48

ds always left handed right from start, me and my dad and fil are too so not surprising dd is right handed though i think. i am pretty ambidextrous though which is quite helpful.

LIZS · 25/11/2008 19:49

dd at about a year

turtledove23 · 26/11/2008 09:24

Thanks all. DS is just about 8 months and always grabs with his left. DH and I are right-handed, but there are a lot of lefties in his family. Time will tell, I guess!

ladyhelen2 · 26/11/2008 09:27

Have known DS who is 3.6 is left handed for ages. Can't remember really when I noticed it but it was probably over a year ago. Both my parents are left handers. DH and I both right. My dad is delighted! Says that left handers are generally super creative (he's a musician) and v clever ( my mum is in Mensa!).

beautifulgirls · 27/11/2008 17:04

Interesting most people who think their child showed a preference early on have left handers from these posts. My DD#1 is clearly left handed and has been since about 2yrs (now 4) and DD#2 I still am not sure though suspecting a right hander.

santapaws · 02/12/2008 12:20

My ds is left handed (2.3) quite clearly and apparantely, im not sure where i heard this but left handed people were, in the very early stages of conception, a twin!

Which is strange because my mum and DH are lefties and twins run strongly in my family!

xx

bigTillyMint · 02/12/2008 12:32

Oh, santapaws, I had never heard that before

DD was always left-handed, from the moment she was able to feed herself! She writes/throws a ball, etc with her left hand

Interestingly she now holds the fork in her left hand, knife in right, and finds it very difficult to "saw" with the knife.

None of the rest of the family are left-handers, apart from BIL.
