I am not one to trawl the shops all day, longingly looking at clothes I can neither afford or get into, but recently I have had to make a couple of trips to buy new shoes for DS etc. I just hate the whole thing, he screams, kicks his feet, launches his dummy....just awful! Of course we get the stares from everyone (mainly the elderly - not sure why??) In the main I try and ignore it, head down and keep pushing the buggy etc. I am organised and have lists of what I need to buy so I can smash and grab. Honestly I try to give him books, his snack pot with raisens, something from the shop to hold and distract him. I just don't know if I have too high expectations, am I being unrealistic?? Perhaps I should accept that we will not be able to go to the shops as a family fo some time. Is there a knack of dealing with this - or is it seemingly the way to handle it by buying a giant sausage roll for him to stuff his face with, which is what I see some mothers do??? p.s I forgot to say he is my only child, (makes me sound more pathetic I know)- and is 20 mths

Things always seem better on reflection, today I feel positive and am going to try the garden centre again (I hate gardening but its local and warm) armed with my cheese, apple and cereal bits and bobs! Its funny how people cope with stuff, somedays things just wash over you and you can smile whilst walking with a toddler screaming and let it go, sometimes its like the end of the world and dispair creeps up on you. Hubby last night said that he feels embarressed when people make sarky comments, I don't feel embarressed, I just feel uncomfortable. I saw another lady dealing with her son and I just felt sympathy. Oh well just another phase in DS life. My sisters DD loves shopping, she is 3, but then she is a girl and I think we are all programmed the same!!! Any advice on the "Pushchair Toolbelt" other than linkies, or ribbon - is it worth a punt on Dragons Den???

Glad you're feeling better about it today. I have two boys and do most of my shopping online! He's just not the age for it, and probably won't be for another year of two. Older people can be very judgemental, I think their memories have faded and nostalgia has taken over. If their children were genuinely better behaved (or at least more compliant) it was probably only because they used the sort of discipline techniques that would have social services round in a shot these days.

Actually I always find the garden centre OK. Does it have pets? Surely it will have a Christmas light display that most toddlers love?
