Reassurance needed - is it safe to have a toy in the cot?

My dd is 6 months old. I've just left her asleep holding a soft toy for the first time. It's only a small thing, suitable for babies and no small parts or anything. I think I'm being overly paranoid but I read that guidlines suggest you don't put soft toys in the cot? What age have other people's babies had them?

I was quite paranoid, btu providing no bits that can come loose, then fine.
I once had to sneak in to retrieve a pooh toy that had a string and fluffy balloon that he would not relinquish whilst awake. God, how I panicked about that!

probably fine. is your dd able to roll in her sleeping bag eg away from toy if it gets in her way? i didnt give mine anything til over 12 months though as not too sure they particularl cared/noticed and thought wasnt worth the risk.now they wouldnt sleep without something....

Ds (20mths) sleeps with a soft toy, usually in a headlock. He does tend to bury his face in it, which worries me a bit, but then his soft toy is about half the size of him. I usually remove it once he's gone to sleep and put it at the other end of the cot. If it's small and your dd can roll away, she should be ok.

RaspberryBlower · 19/11/2008 19:25

Yes nowwearefour, she can roll. It is small as well - only about 7/8 inches long I would say.

Far from it raspberry.
Cot safety and cars are my Big Worries in ds's life.
He's 2 now so I can relax a bit about the former, but the latter is getting more prominent with his constant play dates!

Think I'll go and get it off her. Hope I don't wake her up though.

I have always found my DD's wont sleep without their soft toys, once they hit this age they bonded with their Ellies (oh yes, DD2 has bonded with DD1's spare....it is not helpful!) and they both fall asleep with them on their faces, as long as they can move their heads it will be fine, but I also remove it when I go to bed and put them by their hands instead.
Currently DD2 has 3 books, a toy phone and a ball in the foot of her cot (she is 13 months)
I darent look to see what DD1 has under her duvet tonight!

Both my dss had small cuddlies in with them from a few weeks old. They look so small and desolate without! I always tucked them into the corners, I figured if they can grab them they're safe enough. Always chose the small (no bigger than your hand), non-fluffy, stiched eye sort to start with.
