Help! 4 year old dd trying to get into trouble!?

My dd has started doing a really bizarre thing and I don't know how to deal with it. For the last week or so she has been saying 'Mummy, I said a bad word'. The thing is, she hasn't said a bad word! She says this to me repeatedly throughout the day, and I just say, 'ok, just don't say it again.'
It is getting terrible at bedtime, to the point that I have been in tears toinght. SHe went to bed and started shouting, 'Mummy, I said a bad word' over and over until she was screraming and crying. I really really don't know how to cope with it or why she's doing it as she has done nothing wrong but she seems to be trying to make me cross Ignoring it just made her go into complete hysterics. What is going on??

Sounds like she's looking for attention so I would suggest that you don't ignore it, especially as it's upsetting her so much. Perhaps ask her what bad word she said and why she said it.

She told me it was 'bloody hell' and tbh she probably did hear it from me but I just told her it was a gron up way of saying oh my goodness and she shouldn't say it. But since then she keeps going on and on that she 'just' said a bad word when she has done no such thing! I think it probably is an attention thing, but it is upsetting her and me and I don't understnd her need to keep telling me.

Thanks Dior. I do worry as she gets a particular thng stuck in her head and repeats it for weeks (for months now it has been 'I need a wee but I'll save it til later' and it gets to be a habit - something she says over and over without meaning it. I'll just try reassuring her and trying to forget it tomorrow
