2 year old not speaking or eating much

My niece was 2 last month. She does not speak any words and has never babbled. She can hear and understand very well, but she does not, though can, eat solids.
Is this normal, or does it warrant further investigation. If so, what sort of thing can SIL expect?

Sounds a bit like Tom, although he does babble and the only dinner he eats is shepherds pie. We are waiting for an ENT appointment. He has 2 large tonsils.

Bexie - how many words does Tom have? My friend's DD is 2.2 and doesn't have any words at all yet she just screams and giggles.

thingamajig, I agree that there is not really anything you can do without upsetting everyone.

Hopefully, sil seek advice when she is ready. Let's hope it is sooner rather than later.

Don't want to offend Henrys7thwife. (I'm a slt) pls consider taking your dc to slt for assessment. She will definitely be at a disadvantage if she starts school with a language delay. You may also have a long waiting list in your area. Even if she does have a sudden burst, you will not have lost anything.

DS (2.1) is like this. He has a couple of words. He is going through a very funny stage with food aswell. Some days all he will do is eat and others he completely refuses. I have spoken to the HV about his speach and they are not worried at all. I haven't asked about the food as he is growing well and seems fine to me. I have cut his milk back a lot though which has helped a tiny bit but not hugely.

If there are no words at all 2 + then you should ask for a full developmental assessment. Unfortunately, you will probably not get one without a long wait. If the problem self resolves you won't need the assessment but if it hasn't then at least you have your place in the queue.

Whether the LO is offered a 2yr HV check depends on whether she had one at 18mths. If she got one then, then the next check is 3yrs which is far too long to wait given the nutritional problems. Your SIL and DB need to take her to the GP. How well do you get on with DB? Can you ring for a chat and casually say 'how is DN doing, bet she is chattering away by now isn't she?' or something to start the speech conversation iyswim

NA - about half a dozen. Tom hums the sylabbles to words and has just started to say the phonic sounds to some letters. The ENT referal is for his tonsils the size of 10p coins, but they have also requsted a hearing test/speach therapist. We've been waiting 4.5 weeks for the ENT appt.

Thanks clary.

Lingle, he was born on august, so he will be the youngest (probably) in his year, so obviously that might be an issue when that time comes.

I have heard of the book but havent seen it, but think it might be worth investing in?

I have thought the same also in that if he goes to a speech therapist and hes talking in 6 months, would he have talked then anyway? I suppose its better to find out.

Thanks
