Can't help but bumping for you.

needmorecoffee · 14/11/2008 19:07

grimacing, stretching neck, maybe crying in pain.
The only test is a PH Probe so maybe go to your GP and ask for one

tillyblue · 14/11/2008 19:08

Mine all had it in varying degress...
Some /not all signs are...

Throwing up after feeds
Crying 20 mins after a feed/ and waking up from a sleep
looks like they have a nasty taste in their mouth at times
foul nappies
very grumpy
squeal in their sleep

there are lots of signs but they dont have to have them all.

What seems to be the probem rusmum?

tillyblue · 14/11/2008 19:11

But ph probe is very invasive and not at all pleasant. It also involves staying in hospital for 24 hours.

You could try Gaviscon under the guidance of your GP for 14 days and if you see a marked difference then you will know.

However for one of mine, she had reflux so severely Gaviscon made no difference whatsoever.

needmorecoffee · 14/11/2008 20:07

PH probe is an easy test. Takes a few seconds to put in the probe and you go home and go back the next day to have it taken out. We just had one done.

rusmum, that sounds exactly like the symptoms DS had, and he has silent reflux. We noticed a huge difference with Gaviscon and he also has Ranitidine prescribed by consultant. Good luck - we tried every colic remedy under the sun before it was correctly diagnosed.

rusmum · 15/11/2008 20:56

Gaviscon, need to get from docs????

OP posts:
emma1977 · 15/11/2008 21:10

You may notice:

-Generally 'fractious' baby, often incorrectly labelled as colic
-Vomiting after feeds (not present in silent reflux) or frequent hiccups
-Discomfort after/during feeds- screaming, thrashing, back arching, turning head away
-Poor sleep, frequent waking
-Dislike for being placed on their back or flat, prefers to be held or sleep upright
-Some babies are slow to gain weight )failure to thrive)

You should speak to your HV or GP if you are concerned. Some babies respond well to simple measures such as smaller feeds, more often, frequent burping, raising the bedhead, sleep on their side, keeping upright after feeds for 30 minutes. Medical treatment include feed thickeners (gaviscon, karobel), antacids and antiemetics.

emma1977 · 15/11/2008 21:11

Forgot to mention grimacing (especially when asleep).

MERLYPUSS · 15/11/2008 21:25

Also an acidy smelling breath. Gaviscon is from the GP but it made DT1 very constipated.

whinegums · 15/11/2008 22:28

rusmum, you might be able to get Gaviscon from a pharmacist - some will sell it to you, but it is supposed to be on docs advice if LO under 12 months. As it's about a fiver a box, you're better getting it free on prescription anyway - we are using a couple of boxes a week atm.

rusmum · 15/11/2008 22:30

thanks - do you think we have iot. she often cries suddenlt almost as if she has been nipped!! if YKWIM??

OP posts:
feelingbitbetter · 15/11/2008 23:01

If its a yelp, type of cry that is usually a sign of acid. Go to GP. I told ours DS had reflux, went thru the symptoms, he agreed. We had gaviscon - worked wonders almost instantly (tho agree with the constipation problem too) it was still much better than the horrible time he had feeding without it. If gaviscon doesn't work - there are other treatments, please see GP

Whevmeboobsgon · 15/11/2008 23:07

Gaviscon made my son very constipated. My GP prescribed Ranitidine (my friend had to go to hospital to get it). My son has improved loads now he is weaned and sitting up. He still sicks quite a lot some days, but drinks milk etc with no fuss at all now. He used to be in terrible pain and we almost had to forcefeed him. There is light at the end of the tunne. x

nct73 · 16/11/2008 14:37

Several of the things mentioned by emma1977 were true of DD

"-Generally 'fractious' baby, often incorrectly labelled as colic
-Discomfort after/during feeds- screaming, thrashing, back arching, turning head away
-Poor sleep, frequent waking
-Dislike for being placed on their back or flat, prefers to be held or sleep upright"

Evening feed took ages as discomfort would start after about 2oz. Would have to keep winding by rocking forward & back (traditional bouncing winding made her worse as brings up more acid) and then trying to get a bit more down. She however didnt vomit which I think was why it took so long for them to diagnose her as once she was prescribed Gaviscon, she was a different baby within a week. Unfortunately for us it happened over the several months which are considered prime time for teaching good bedtime pattern but she got used to all this attention & rocking & falling asleep upright. It took months to get her to go to sleep on own in cot and still generally needs us there a year on.

A little bit of orange juice at lunchtime seemed to balance the constipation problems.

CarGirl · 16/11/2008 14:41

Screaming most of the time & hardly sleeping. Absolute nightmare, brings you to your knees & makes you feel like walking out on your child???

dd only slept 8 out of 24 hours, was horrendous. If she posseted it was really curdled & stinky even if she had literally just finished a feed.

Was absolutely thriving weight wise.

emma1977 · 16/11/2008 17:07

CarGirl- I can thoroughly empathise with the sheer exhaustion and lack of sleep. I used to look at my friends who had 'normal' babies cooing about the easy first few weeks and how blissful it was that they slept all of the time and think to myself, 'where am I going wrong?'

CarGirl · 16/11/2008 17:24

It was just the screaming, I had a 14 month old & a 6.5 year old, I knew there was something wrong and they kept telling me it was a touch of colic.........

emma1977 · 16/11/2008 20:32

Same here. When he wasn't sleeping, he was screaming- literally from the second he woke. Don't get me started on HVs and 'colic'.

rusmum · 17/11/2008 16:46

just got gaviscon - will let you all know!!!!! thanks !

I'm glad it worked for you too

CarGirl · 20/11/2008 21:07

I'm so pleased you only suffered for 15 weeks & not the 6 months we did! Your life is going to change beyond belief!

kchivs · 11/12/2008 10:12

Its so good to read this thread, my baby is 5 months old and was only diagnosed with reflux 4 weeks ago by hospital although been seeing the GP for almost 4 months (also told was colic)! We have still not slept for the whole 5 months as he still wont settle at night as cant get him to take the ranitidine and other medecine. He wont sleep on his back wants his legs held up the whole time. He is so grumpy its awful.
