Is it o.k to let my 3 year old watch the same DVD every day after nursery ??

Hi, my daughter is 3 years and 8 months old and has 3 full days at nursery and two half days.
When she comes home from a full day, that really is action packed. They go for woodland walks, dancing sessions, gym, music etc, all she wants to do is curl up on the sofa and watch Lady and the Tramp.
I've tried saying no lets do this or that instead, but she only ever wants that DVD.
Is this o.k for her to do, or will it harm her development? She's quite happy to chat to me, have a story etc after it's finnished.
It's become a routeen for her, and she loves routeen.
Should I let her carry on? it does relax her.

sounds fine to me, after her action-packed day it probably does relax her.

Hmm - some bloke from a kids' tv channel was on here a while back talking about repeat viewing. He said it 'empowers' the children becuase they know what is coming next and feel comforted by it.
Must admit DS regularly watches the same episode of his favourite TV show we taped (especially when he's poorly or wants quiet time).
Ds watched Ghostbusters twice a day when he was little and it did him no harm (so he says!)

i think its ok, my dd is about the same age and sound very similar, sge likes the same book every night before bed, and will happilly watch the same tweenies dvd every day. i think its meant to make them feel safe because they know whats coming

I'm not sure if she understands all of it but she does enjoy it.
When she first saw the seene where puppy Lady was asleep on the bed then the it seemed the nexed morning she was grown up.
I said to my daughter
"that's lady now she's grown up" and she said "yes, you grew up earlier mummy".

Put it this way - If I have to watch Wow Wow Wubbzy - Wuzzleberg Express one more time I will go doo-lally. BUT DS loves it and it gives me 20 minutes to do jobs/have a wee/start his tea (and DH 20 minutes for a kip )

It's fine. But it can be very annoying, especially when you are dragged in to see the same bit time and time again! I can still remember a friend of mine years ago saying that if she could she would make Willy die at the end of Free Willy just so she din't have to see him jump the barrier for the 100th time!

My 3 yr old is doing the same with her Charlie and Lola dvd every night after nursery. I think after an action packed day they sometimes need time to de-compress.

jumpingbeans · 13/11/2008 14:05

Your lo has great taste, I love this film

Boyswillbeboys · 13/11/2008 14:06

I think it's fine. When my DS started full time at nursery he used to come home exhausted. All he wanted to do was lie on my bed and watch Bob the Builer (same episode every time ...). This went on for a while and he's grown out of it now, doesn't seem to have done any permanent damage

mummyloveslucy · 13/11/2008 14:06

She likes me to be with her when she watches it.
She'll accept if I go away for a few minutes but then she'll call me saying "watch it Mummy" or "you're missing it". If I say "I've seen it before," she says "yes I know".

Like Iklboo - I heard that it's better to have them watch the same DVD over and over (because they're trying to make sense of it) than watch lots of random programmes. Also, my eldest loves her DVDs, but also loves her books, so I don't get wound up about it.

JustKeepSwimming · 13/11/2008 14:08

Oh if you have to watch it too then no it's not ok

DS will happily watch and laugh at the same thing time after time, but is happy for me to go and load dishwasher, etc.
(though i mostly tune out and MN )

mummyloveslucy · 13/11/2008 14:09

Thanks, it was one of my favourate childhood films too.
I remember watching in when I came home from Secondery school.
It's a really cosy film I think.

She'll be home in about an hour, so I'll be treated to yet another viewing.
It's a good job it's one I like. I may live to regret saying that though.
