9 yr old - how to build up self esteem and confidence

I have two sons. ds1 (11) is a bit of an odd bod, not well co-ordinated and sporty at all, had major speech problems when young and still sounds rather peculiar, also tends to talk about off-the-wall subjects, and is a geeky/science nerd. So all in all he comes across as rather wierd from the outset. But he has immense self-esteem and emotional resilience and really doesn't care how other people judge him. As a result he is very popular and is a real leader and trend-setter. (There's no way he would be a follower!)

ds2 is very different. In many ways he is far more 'normal' and more likely to 'fit in'. But he obsesses about it. Often his justification for wanting something or wanting to do something is because he doesn't want to stand out. His experiences seem to be dominated by a desire to seek the approval of his peers. As a result, of course, he doesn't get it. And generally of the two he is the least happy/content.
