Do I have to take DS to these? My HV has changed since I had DD and I am angry and very distrustful of new HV who I believe is incompetent. DO I have to take DS to this check up and if I do can I ask a Doctor to do it instead?

I think you should take him to the check ups as I believe it's important to rule out problems and voice any concerns BUT i do understand how you feel about the HV, I'd ask the doctor to do the checks if you'd feel more comfortable doing that.

Thank you, I saw a freind of mine yesterday and we were chatting and because her DD was on 25th percentile at her 8 month checks she got told she was a dwarf , HV didn't even no what reflux was either.

Dwarf?? On the 25th centile.? Your hv would have a heart failure is she met my ds2 then. I can understand why you don't want to see her.

Is it the 8 month check? Our GP does ours. I don't see any reason why you can't get the gp to do it

Dwarf??? What a ridicullous thing to say??! My ds is on 91st centile so no doubt she'd see him as a 'giant'?? . I understand you not wanting to see her. I often wonder how some of these health visitors actually get these jobs, we have a team of hv in our area so we never see the same one, some of them are brilliant, others are completely loopy. Because my ds has always been big (even at birth) one of the hv said milk wasn't enough to maintain his weight so I should wean at 12 weeks so he didn't get malnourished . I didn't btw! Def go to the doc.

What checks are these? We don't get any in our area now, thought they'd been stopped everywhere because HVs too busy trying to help families with serious problems. Easy enough to find out what your child should be doing (lots of info in Birth to Five Book, baby's Red Book) and see Dr/HV if worried. No need to take up HCP's time if you know everything OK.

fledtoscotland · 08/11/2008 20:55

we dont have these checks either catsbeensick. nor do we have a red book as our health board thinks they are a waste of money. DS1 was weighed at his 4month injections and then not seen again by the HV until the year jabs. DS2 has only seen the HV once apart from injection time.

what do they do at these checks out of curiosity?

RhinestoneCowgirl · 08/11/2008 21:01

Last check that DS had was his 9 month check, HV was so keen that we got a home visit (I think this was because I had never taken him to baby clinic).

They used to do a 2 yr check round here but this has now been phased out in favour of sending you a letter with a checklist of 'things your 2-yr old should be doing', plus an exhortation to give them a ring if you're worried.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 08/11/2008 21:40

Nope, still keen on all checks here.

HVs are optional. You do not have to see them. Eight month checks were formally decreed pointless some years ago (before my DS1 4.10 was born). Some areas still have them but if you don't have one you're not putting your child at risk.
