don't think it's abnormal - my 16 mo old is coming close too...

littleducks · 07/11/2008 22:11

depends how mordern your house is and how low your handles are

stairgates

Umlellala · 07/11/2008 22:12

Oh gosh, my 2.5 year old only worked it out (and could reach) a couple of months ago... is she very tall? She's v clever though can understand how it would be a pain

cupsoftea · 07/11/2008 22:14

my dd has been able to turn handles on her own for ages - I carry her around and she can open the door! very useful if I have a cup of tea in the other.

llareggub · 07/11/2008 22:17

Pretty normal I think, but a real PITA.

We stayed in a caravan when DS was 16 months and the little monkey discovered he could unlock the caravan door and let himself out. It was one of those locks you get in public loos, not a key but a lever.

Worst holiday ever. Neither DH or I slept a wink in case DS went on a midnight wander!

spottyzebrahasthelurgy · 07/11/2008 22:21

lol cups of tea.
i really wish she hadn't learnt to do this yet.
im not sure how tall she is but i think shes tall.
i think i need to bolt the doors.high up

llareggub lol i can see how that was a nightmare

My ds (15 months) does this too. He's done it for the past month or so and it's a nightmare as he can't be contained now! He also has a screaming fit if I move him away from the`door and try and close it again . I am investing in more stair gates this weekend!

nelix2000 · 08/11/2008 13:14

my ds (very tall) started this at 12 months..we now have turned the handles upside down and he is JUST figured that out now at 20 months lol...I have a stairgate at the kitchen door to stop him doing any damage to himself and the other living room door just leads to the hall so no harm he can do there!......they are clever little buggers!

spottyzebrahasthelurgy · 08/11/2008 13:28

they are clever little buggers.
agree with you there.

stairgates all over it is then.

aha another escapologist...ds mastered internal doors a couople of months ago (he's 17mo) and is now spending long periods of time inserting a key in the lock to the back door and fiddling hopefully.
he hasnt yet found the right key . but it can only be a matter of time...also caught him yesterday trying to climb over the stairgate . he had his leg halfway over it

ElenorRigby · 08/11/2008 18:32

Our 14 month old DD has mastered some of our stair gates!
DD's daddy was tied to his cot by his parents, he was a very active toddler apparently!!

lol shes is so like her dad! ie such a lively inquisitive monkey!

Hulababy · 08/11/2008 18:35

Sadly it is normal. Friends DS has just turned 1yo and can open the door to their cellar - which has very steep stairs directly behind it!
