Suggestions for toys for a 3 month old boy before I waste my money

Not sure if this is the right forum for this question but basically I have a very active 3 month old boy and I want to get him some toys that will keep him stimulated but I don't want to fill the house with things that he just won't be interested in. He loves his baby gym but its just not really enough. Has anyone any suggestions as to what the best toys out there are that will keep him occupied and interested.

Anything he can grab and shake and chew on.
Is he batting at the baby gym yet? Could make new things to go on there and rotate them. Stuff from round the house will do, just make sure there are no small bits to come off or sharp edges.

At 3 months ds2 was only just reaching out to stuff so all he has was a babygym and us to play with. He loved being propped up so he could watch us. Loved listening to us babble on about whatever we're doing. Listening to music. OO he had a pat mat too for tummy time.

The fisher price rainforest jumperoo is our best investment (and we did waste a lot of money on c* in the beginning! ). He's still too little for it but at around 4-5 months (once they can hold up their head properly), it will be really good for him. My DS is 8.5 months and will still happily spend a while in it (while I have a quick shower or tidy up) when he usually can't sit still! Something else that DS really enjoys at the toy library is something like a plastic activity arch with toys that dangle but it's got a bit that the baby can kick to activate sounds and lights so it's a bit more to do than a activity mat. Those are also useful for when they are bigger and want to hoist themselves up to stand!

door bouncer, singing alfie bear

skwish
And my ds is 5 months and loves this drum

Make sure wherever you lie him he can see out. A view of trees moving in the breeze seems to hold attention, as does light changing, so shadows etc. Might sound weird, but it made a huge difference to my lo being happy or not when he was that small.

What about a rainmaker? They're cheap. i got one from Mothercare for a few pounds and my DS still enjoys shaking it at 12 months.

Oh yes, find out if there is a toy library near you! Best thing I did. He's now got a vast array of toys that I can change every fortnightly without spending a bomb.

has he got a bouncer (ie boucing chair etC) ... I've got a rainsforst one and like angel says good for watching tv - at about 3 months she became super interested in baby tv/dvds (And indeed any of mummys programmes, rugby etc.. in no way is she a tv addict given half the chance )

also any type of noisy toy is popular now (Dd 4 months) - so rainmaker I'd agree with ..also I've got a plastic links rattle (it joins up and she can shove it in her mouth).

bar codes always seem more interesting than the toy

angel1976 · 06/11/2008 21:33

I've got a really good condition rainforest bouncing chair that I can sell you if you are interested! Hardly used as we left it at the inlaws and just didn't spend as much time there as we thought we would and it got shoved up the loft!

Wondercubes from ELC like building bricks, they love to bang them together and my 4yo still plays with them.

Thanks for all your replies. Funnily enough my mother told me on wednesday she had bought him a jumperoo for Christmas and I thought oh no not some huge piece of tat to fill up the living room - but now actually I am quite excited about it(thanks for the offer anyway angel1976). I am going to go to ELC tomorrow and will bear all your suggestions in mind.I'll also go and investigate a toy library - as we don't have much storage space here.
