Continuing trapped wind, now nearly 6 months...[sad]

Hi,our daughter (breastfed) has suffered from trapped wind almost from day one and is still at nearly 6 months. We have tried many different things to sort it out but nothing sems to work very well. We are now expert at winding techniques and have tried excluding the usual suspects from my diet (alliums, brassicas etc) with little effect. She doesn't seem to show any symptoms of lactose intolerance and is very normal and healthy in every other respect. We turned to gripe water about six weeks ago out of desperation which has provided some relief to her, albeit temporary. We are loathe to give her any other conventional, over the counter medication as it all has junk in it (E-numbers, artificial sweetners, preservatives etc) but are at our wits end and now looking at the unopened bottle of Infacol that is sat on the shelf.. We did try fennel tea some while ago, didn't seem to do anything but we are going to try it again. Our doctor (who is very good) still thinks that she will just grow out of it but that doesnt help us or her when she wakes up in pain through the night...
Does anybody know of a remedy that has an active ingredient (like simeticone in Infacol) but doesn't have the crap that invariably goes with it?
Apologies for the long-windedness (no pun intended) of this post but, Help!

P.S. I forgot to mention that we have also tried Cranial Osteopathy (4 sessions) and Colocynth homeopathic remedy...

Sorry, don't know of any remedies. You need to use the conventional stuff by the sound of it. It's not poison and you've given everything else a fair shot.

am sure you've already done baby massage but it was helpful for ds's colic, and bicycling his legs with him lying on his back.
but we used infacol too and it was the only thing that gave him real relief from the pain - tbh that was more important to us than e-numbers. worth a try?

As a mum of a fellow sufferer, I sympathise. I am loathe to give DS anything either as his poor little body has already been loaded with meds BUT I did try gripe water - he hated it and was sick.
Infacol has to be given before every feed as it has an accumulative effect. Tried it religiously every feed and made no difference, tho DS LOVED the orange flavour!
We also tried Dr Brown bottles - again did nothing for DS and not suitable unless you want to express every feed (tried that early on - very hard work).
Giving cool boiled water in between feeds has helped the most, tho TBH not that much but more than the over the counter remmedies. I completely understand you not wanting to use them, but you have tried everything else really, and I don't think there is anything available without e-numbers etc. If you already have infacol there, it's worth a try. Weighing up the crap thats in it against the relief she may have from it, I'd give it a go.

DS is also incredibly grouchy when the trapped wind has to come out the other end. We have found that a good amount of tummy time throughout the day helps massively. I think it stretches things out a little for him.
Don't know if this is any help at all!
Are you weaning soon? Maybe you will find an improvement then. Till then, in all honesty, I don't think there is much more to be done other than hope they grow out of it.

Thanks for your replies, we gave the infacol a go for 5 days and it made her worse.. so into the bin it went....
I have found some remedies that are used in the U.S. but for the life of me I cannot find a U.K. stockist or an American one who is willing to ship overseas. There are two in particular that we are interested in trying, 'BioGaia ProBiotic Drops' is one and 'Wellements Organic Gripe Water' is another but as I have said, you just can't seem to get the damn stuff over here... We saw them on www.colichelp.com so I have emailed them to see if they can help but in the meantime our poor little madam will just have to keep on burping and farting

This might not be relevant but my dd was very similar at this age. We tried every thing including infacol, but like you, found none of the over the counter remedies helped. It used to make us so sad, she cried for most of her early life. The only thing that seemed to settle her and give her temporary relief was to keep feeding her. She didn't get overweight though, even though at times she was feeding every 30 mins or so, as she just passed all the excess through with very loose bowel movements (sorry TMI). I cut out so much from my diet in desperation which helped but didn't cure the problem as it was actually a combination of things. I actually managed to breatfeed my dd for 19 months and I'm glad I didn't give up as it turned out our daughter has a sugar enzyme deficiency which is quite unusual - but very similar to this and much more common is sugar malabsorbtion or intolerance which can give similar indigestion symptoms. Our daughter, now aged 4, was (and is) lactose intolerant and also has a fructose intolerance (milk and fruit sugars). Of course breastmilk contains milk sugars as well so we couldn't eliminate all sugars! A search of the web for 'sugar malabsorption' might be helpful. Hope that helps and hope you find an effective solution soon. X

Is there any chance your daughter could have silent reflux. Only cause I battled with my son for months thinking it was trapped wind, and finally a doctor told me it was reflux, and he got put on gaviscon and it all got better. Aologies if you have checked this route, but my son was 6 months when we realised.
