I made the mistake of letting my little girl watch the disney chanel now and again, now shes addicted so i'm trying to keep the tv switched off but she gets bored quickly with pat a cake, itsey bitsey spider, etc, etc. we play tickle games and hide and seek but what else can i do to keep her entertained when we're at home. She can crawl and walk so long as shes holding on to things.

peek a boo

finger painting
bouncing

lie on the floor and let her crawl over you
tickles
make music (home made instruments are just as much fun - crinkly paper, pasta inside loo tubes, carboard boxes or tins as drums)
stand up site down
singing
clapping

My third child is a 10 and a half month old. She likes playing with toys on the floor and she also likes looking out of our front window.

I don't think they really need loads of entertaining at this age. They don't have a long concentration span and are always moving onto the next thing and are easily distracted. I don't think that's boredom. It's just what babies do?

Emptying the kitchen cupboards or the bookcase keeps them busy for hours at this age.

My DS is 7 months but I imagine some of his favourite things would work for your DD

  • give her a selection of household items to explore - pans, tins, towel, remote control etc.
  • give her different fruit and veg to hold and feel and tell her about them, maybe then cut some and give her a piece to eat
  • show her around the kitchen - i open the fridge and explain what is in there and let him touch stuff to feel how cold it is and DS looks ever so interested even though he clearly has no idea what I'm prattling on about!
  • singing - i just make stuff up about what we're doing in a not very tuneful way. it sounds terrible, and it has taken months to lose any inhibitions I had about this, but he loves it
  • let her sit on your lap and explore your face and body - bit painful when they pinch your hand or grab your hair, but this keeps my DS entertained for ages (10-15 mins given his attention span!) and I get to enjoy cuddles and being close to him while he does it
  • show her how things work in the house like closing and opening curtains, switching lights on and off
- I sing The Wheels on the Bus, but as The Baby on the Bus and do things like "Moves Up and Down", "Goes Round and Round", "Plays Peek a Boo" and do actions to suit the words. Can go on for as long as you can think of actions

DS loves the "Big Scary Tiger" game. Basically I crawl around going "I'm a big scary tiger...ROOOOOARR!...and I like to eat little boys' toes" then pretending to eat his toes with full on sound effects. The repeat for lots of different parts of the body. He finds it hysterical. He also likes it if I crawl around and pretend to be a cat.
He also likes emptying Daddy's pant drawer, that keeps him going for at least 10mins!

thanks, thats given me a few ideas, going to try the tiger thing, sounds good fun, might also try the finger painting, I thought she'd be too young but i suppose so long as the paints non-toxic and you dont mind the mess its fine.

We do sing loads of songs with actions but she doen't seem that intrested in my attempts, probably Micky Mouse was much better at it than me !!!

You should carry on with the singing jellyjem. I always sang to DS but he usually just looked bored or whinged until I stopped. Now he listens very intently and claps seriously when I have finished - it's very cute!

jellyjem · 04/11/2008 16:51

Hensmum - AHHHH thats sooo sweet, wish my little girl would do that. How old is your little one?

I'm going to try the tiger game with DS tomorrow

Early Learning Centre has finger paints that we've used - a few family members have had fingerpainted birthday cards which they have loved!

LaTrucha · 04/11/2008 20:12

I sit dd in front of a box with lots of different thing in - toys kitchen stiff, clothes - anything.

She takes them all out. I put them all in. Hours of fun.

LaTrucha · 04/11/2008 20:22

kitchen STUFF

LolaLadybird · 05/11/2008 08:37

Agree with Latrucha - DS (11 mo) will happily empty boxes/baskets of 'stuff' for ages.

Also, sitting on floor rolling ball between you (when I say roll, DS just bats at it with his hand but we can make a game of it).

The Usborne 'That's not My Monster/Princess/Puppy etc ..' books are great at this age as they're proper board books but with touchy/feely bits. We had several with DD and DS is now starting to enjoy them.

HensMum · 05/11/2008 10:18

He's just 1 and really getting into pointing, waving and clapping though he does get them confused sometimes - claps when we say "bye-bye" etc.
Just thought of something else! I haven't tried this myself but someone at my mums and babies group suggsted messy play with jelly. Basically just dump a load of jelly onto their highchair tray and let them play with it. Probably one to try just before bath time!

mamaspanx · 05/11/2008 10:24

banging pots and pans with wooden spoons

hiding things under cushions...show her object, hide it, lift cushion and gasp in amazment.

play peekaboo with the mirror on a wall, holding on to her and jumping out and let her touch her reflection
